These four dead Ironwood have been down 2 to 4 years, they're inside drying out.

The pictures that have just the two rounds standing are from the top & bottom.

I also had some near the house which I split and stacked.

I get a fair amount of that too (we call it 'hop hornbeam' or just hornbeam). They get up to 4-5" in diameter and then just die and fall over. I search for them because it is excellent firewood.

That gonna be your "go to / overnight wood " when it gets to be really winter ? :)

betting the 2-4 year stuff is pretty dry , dry enough to burn anyway

That's the only ironwood I find too. Smaller stuff, that dies. It is very similar to shagbark hickory when young, so I'm sure I've got more of that than I think.

Shag/ ironwood, eh either way it's heavy and awesome firewood.

I picked the three that I thought had the most moisture in them, they're inside again so I'll take another reading tomorrow afternoon.

I still think these will be ready by the first Sunday of December.

The rack they're stacked in is a good 20 feet from the stove, the splits in the picture are about two feet away from the stove.

Good habit. I like to put a few pieces right next to the indoor furnace for a day or two, just to catch a few percent of the residual moisture. A little heat and air movement does a world of good. Going to place some bets on this, over and unders?

Wow. That stack would look a lot better on our place. I'd even let the ornery one stack it....I think. At least I might let her try...if she made some more cookies. But Zap, just to let you know, I'm now eating cinnamon rolls! Sure is nice being married to a good baker.
