I was wondering what most people do with all the twisted and ugly splits of firewood? I often use it as an excuse to build a holz hausen. Was just wondering what most of you do with them.

Use them in the shoulder season or in the fire pit.

I just mixed a couple in with some silver maple last night.

I store them in a couple boxes I made from treated wood.

How do you stack or store them up until that point?

Right where I want to be.
Mine usually end up on the top of the stacks. If there's too many, I start an ugly stack.
If they're REALLY ugly, they go in the fire pit.

    Well now, that's convenient.

I also put quite a few of them out on the curb in a box for free. People pick them up for firepits.

The last bunch I just tossed into the front corner of the shed where I kind of framed in a bin about 4' wide by 5' in length. Then as I was stacking the wood and came out to that point, I just continued to stack over the top of the bin which was overflowing. In 3 years it should all be good to burn along with the 6 cord in that shed. The shorts and uglies are a mix of both hard and softwoods. The chances are they will be used in the house for heat rather than in a fire pit. Just load up a large box full and bring it on into the house when it's prime.

I use em as a place for the squirrels to hide so the hounds can have some fun.:)

Then I burn em when I'm not worried about packing the stove full.

I pile them by the fire pit. I either saw or split them small enough that they will fit in the stove though. Whatever is not burned outside gets burned first in the stove come October. I stack them on a pallet and top-cover, and beside them I'll usually stack some pine or cedar that I like burning outside too. I actually just finished burning all of them in the stove a few days ago. This has kept me from tapping into my real stacks for the first 2 months of the burning season.

I put them between the front and back rows to solidify them on the skid...
