Too early for here, maybe along about the middle of December for the tree. I'm sure the boss will start with some other items first. These will all be tempting targets for the 2 year old and the kitty.

G in case it helps, there is free software available that you can use to do the drive data transfer. I use one called EaseUS Todo Backup. Weird name, but it is a true diamond in the rough. It does backup, imaging, drive to drive clone (including to dis-similar hardware). Anyway, I love it and I have used it successfully to transfer one drive to another several times in the past, with no hiccups. That Sandisk 960 is still available on Amazon for $199, and the 480 is $109. I just dropped the 960 in my carriage, couldn't resist that deal! Have fun, no matter what you do here you are going to be one happy camper after the SSD is installed in your machines.

I was able to find a 500gb Samsung EVO 850 for $125 but limited to 1 piece so that will go in my PC.

Still undecided on what to put in the laptop but I think the Sandisk 480gb is calling me :)

Good point and a few questions. If I replace just the OS drive in my laptop and leave the original 2nd drive (these are not mirrored like my desktop) will that give me a similar boost?

    AND
As I typed this I just remembered I have mirrored drives in my PC, so a single EVO 850 will not work there , unless I dump the redundant drive. I guess putting in 2 high quality drives kind of negates the "I" in RAID.

    Thoughts?

Yes, absolutely. Use the 2nd (traditional) drive as your backup drive for the OS/ SSD drive.

It does, you won't gain any throughput. *Search around (google) "850 EVO raid 0" for other opinions on this.

If that was here, I would.. Install a single SSD, tasked as the primary OS drive, then at some point AFTER you have verified the SSD is working well for you (a few days/week), re-task one of the traditional drives as 2nd Drive in the desktop for storage/backup, same as the laptop. Just don't do that right off the bat, -always- have a regression plan in case there is an issue, e.g. swap the old drives back in.

Thanks to you and ttdberg for the tips, very much appreciated.

Reality is that my I7 2820 and Nvidia GT550M display adapter is more powerful than my Desktop with the Athlon II 965 (another error on my end by not getting a Athlon II six core when they were available for cheap $$) and an older Nvidia 460GTX video card. At this point, I am considering if updating the CPU to a newer AMD and maybe a newer graphics card is worth it or if I should dump AMD and start looking into Intel-but that also means new memory as well. My desktop motherboard is an Asus Sabertooth with a 990FX chipset, so it was no slouch when I bought it. I was really banking on AMD coming through, but they just couldnt keep up with Intel.

As much as I wold like to get back into PC gaming, the time hasnt been there for many years and my favorite genre is long gone (Military Jet Fighter sims) so optimizing the current gear may be my best bet.

I MAY use the Samsung in the laptop and go Sandisk/Kingston or even Crucial MX100 if I an find some at a good price in the desktop.

I checked out the extended forecast on Accuweather this AM. Enjoy this heat wave, in about 2 weeks the bottom is going to drop out. A lot of mornings with a low close to 0 right through the end of the month in this part of the world.

That's some impressive speed bump material! I will get similar results when the stove runs at a slow burn for extended time.
