Don't worry about the life expectancy G, I don't expect you will run into any issues there. I have used Crucial and Kingston SSDs in my PCs and they are both perfectly fine. The first Crucial had a problem where the PC would spontaneously reboot at regular timed intervals. That was fixed with a firmware update issued by Crucial. The Kingston SSDNow is a nice package because it comes with the external USB kit and Acronis software for doing the initial data transfer and it works like a charm. I would buy either brand again without hesitation. The Sandisk 480 for $104 is a superb deal and also Crucial has a 500 for $119 which is a steal too. Happy shopping!

FWIW Upgrading to SSD was probably the most impactful computer upgrade I've done. The speed difference is like night and day. Would never build or buy another computer without one.

I have always built my own PC's-just havnt had to do that for a few years now. A guy I work with said the same about SSD mentioning it was like making an older computer so much quicker.

Doing the media from a thumb drive works very well so I'm not going to worry too much about the drive speed. After all the drive is much faster than most internet connections, simultaneous bulk transfers are an entirely different matter however.

I backed up my media yesterday afternoon to my 5TB external drive and it took just a bit of time. My external backup is a 5TB Seagate USB 3.0 unit that I got so I could do a full system upgrade in August since a full backup no longer fit on my external 250 GB WD USB 2.0o HD. Pete that was one of the units I was looking at.

I don't normally need the fastest HD just because it is media, the thing that I need on the fast side is the base cpu engine and I haven't even began to tap the critter in this system. Transcoding requires just a bit of horsepower in the system.

As for disc capacity I can remember when a 5 1/4" floppy was large enough for what I was doing and a 1200bps modem was fast in the micro world.

    Happy T-Day one and all.

This one is a blessing for us. It is the first Thanksgiving in more than 10 years our entire family is one place (4 generations - 39 of us). Makes me realize why my Love refuses to even consider selling this old barn of a house.

Lots to do on the honey do list so thats all.

Just wanted to wish everyone a great holiday and hope you all are surrounded by family and friends.

My brother is on his way down now, I'll soon send the kids out to pick up my mother-in-law, and my brother-in-law will get here soon. We're a small family, but it's good to see everyone. Those of you celebrating today, enjoy your day off. And no matter where you live, I hope there are things in your lives that you can be thankful for.

I can take it back further well before there were micro systems. I have an IBM1130 emulator amongst the almost 600,000 files spinning on my primary HD, how about some heavy iron. I got my start on an IBM1130.

My first micro didn't have any disc drive at all.

I remember saving on an external tape drive. First Mac didn't even have a HD.....entire system & word processor were on a 3.5" floppy.

How about a Radio Shack TRS-80? Learned BASIC on that puppy......with a voice-type tape recorder to save work....LOL.

I suppose I should mention Univac 9200/9300/9400/9480. Never had a chance to write code for their 110x line. I have emulators and OSes for most of the machines I wrote code for still spinning.

How about the Atari line, had a couple of them just for giggles, never played with them much. When the micros got to be under $50 at the yard sales I bought just a few to play with, some of those got given away.
