morning all. Just sitting up in my tree stand behind the house and realized I would prefer to be cutting these trees as opposed to sitting in one. Here are a few pics from the Tree. Mostly maple and ash.....but on a steep hill. Pics are deceiving as I am 20 ft up. Any one else torn?
I dont really like sitting in treestands either. I wish there was some ash trees in the woods where i cut.
100% with you. My woods are open, and I find my mind wandering from looking for movement to looking which trees need culling and laying my plan of attack for when the snow finally flies. It gets worse if I'm out walking (I could build a road here; Oh, I didn't know that tree had such a bad side; Huh, I didn't realize there was a Yellow Birch over here, ...).
I grew up in those sorts of woods. Dad would have us sit along old logging roads because there were so many other hunters out. At least they kept the deer moving. I took a 120lb 4-pt yesterday, so now I can move firewood to the woodshed over Thanksgiving.
I find myself cutting and wishing I was Hunting! With 3 little kiddos and living in town it makes it tough to get out and find places! I'm hoping one of these times I can find someone who wants their woods cleaned up and I can ask for a place to hunt! My oldest boy is going to be 7 after the first of the year and starting to show interest!
Wow, a clean woods. Hardly any underbrush; more like a park. Easier shooting for sure. I've been torn this year but most years would rather be hunting. Just harder for me to get in the mood to hunt this year. I'm sort of chomping at the bit hoping I can cut wood. May give it a try some day this coming week just to see if I can handle it this year. With the snow we just got, it is difficult to see very far at all in the woods because so much snow sticking to every little branch or twig. But, I do plan on going out probably around 3:00 today.
So this tree is roughly 18 -24 inches at the base. Roughly 70 ft tall. All of the weight is on the good side. Tough cut I will make over the next two days. Tree is still alive, but will be tricky.....
IMO Fill the freezer while the season is open. No growth hormones , antibiotics ..etc in wild game You can cut firewood well into winter if you need to.
I agree with bogydave . Hunt while you can. You can plan your cutting and all, but the season's only so long.
