I just thought the fins on the cylinder looked new.

Was the 390's chain on backwards? :p This one runs ok. Not the factory Stihl top end either. Muffler mod is extreme in this puppy. I thought it could use a tad more umph on the low end of things.

My 036 is not stock, I replaced the carb with a china "Pro" compensating one. Had to use longer carb bolts and rig up a different tank vent, tweeked the choke linkage a little too. New pro air filter and china covers (with a new bent/curved 036 tag) . Think I changed it to the larger "Pro" sprocket bearing too. Then did a MM to about 80% of the exhaust port with a dual port. Definitly not your mama's stock 036. Just my go-to-beater.

Nothing fancy, just functional and cheap! I just cut/bend a piece of metal into the shape I want. Determine the size hole you want and drill it. Sandwich a piece of screen in there and fasten with some good sheet metal screws. Retune and you are good to go!

Of course, you could always just do this! (this unscreened 460 muffler actually runs and sounds great!)

I work on my hoard of everything. My wife calls me a hoarder. Its in my blood.

But about half the time I have what I need.

My friend can't understand it . He has to go to lowes all the time. But he lives in the city and its five mins each way. Its a half hour for me one way to the store!!! Can't afford to run to town every time I need a screw or bolt. Or washer or

Since I was little I would always grab stuff out of the trash buy the side of the road and take it home and strip it of nuts, bolts, washers, springs, metal parts, wire, switches, etc. Between about 10 and 40 I accumulated a heck of a lot of stuff. Now at 60 I have only put a small dent in it. That was just the drawer of screws under 1" that I dumped on the bench! No trouble finding some matching black, aggressively threaded ones I wanted.

When I run to Home Depot now, its usually so I can sneak over to the casino next door for a few minutes. The money I save on parts and stuff I blow over there! :(

This is a MS 460 I did a muff mod on. I just happen to like the look. I do simple ones also like cutting a slit in the side of the muffler and then prying it out. I do not have any pics of the 036 muff I did.

I forgot to mention the slot for the spark arrester is still in place and so could still be used on national forest land.

Pretty sure those early non pro cylinders had different port timing. I've had 2 with red master control levers and both of those ran better than any new Pro model 036 I had.

swags has the one 034 that I put an 036 cylinder from a red master control switch. MasterMech ran it at the 1st annual FHC GTG. It was sporting a 25" bar and pulled it nicely. I've never compared the differences in port timing. But I would put money on them being different

So my red switch 036 beater is even more special than I thought it was! Maybe I should be putting the wear on the plain jane 360 instead!

Here is a couple more pics of my saw. I have a Husqvarna exhaust deflector that I can use on the other side. Plenty of stainless steel mesh at work too.

I got an 039 yesterday. It is not the prettiest saw but it has 140 psi of compression and the piston and cylinder look like new on the inside. I pulled the recoil and I was able to see the stihl part number cast in the cylinder. Thanks for the tip on that Boog.

That's a sweet looking red switch saw, better keep it away from Dex! Looks like you have that fuel tank vent mounted backwards. It should be popped off and turned 180* so that the slit mounts over the plastic tab below it. Take a look at the 024 saw in that photo of mine back on the first page. You can see how that black style vent was in the way of the larger compensating carb/filter I put on mine, that's why I had to rig up the tube vent.

I was looking at them online last night and they were $15+. So does the dealer have them for a better price?

I swear last time I bought a bunch of stuff from baileys I threw one in the cart for around $3. I would not have bought it at $15+!!! I'm cheap!! I finally used it this summer to make my 372xp a dual port.
