Any old time radio fans out in FHC land? If so, do you have a favorite show?

Does "The rest of the Story" by Paul Harvey count? I do remember listening to him- but heck he was on the radio nearly up to the time he passed some years ago....
    Always a good story:thumbs:

And not to get too far off topic, you could always count on a good piece by Andy Rooney at the end of 60 minutes....
And now back to schlot's regularly scheduled Radio hour!

My mother used to listen to all the soaps in the afternoon, Mary Worth, etc. In the early 50's, we got a tv, but it didn't work well, and the tube quickly burned out, but the sound was good. I thought it was just a funny kind of radio, and would turn it on and listen to it.
We didn't get a working tv until about 1959.
My father loved to listen to Sgt. Preston. I like the dog.;)

Eric VW...I'm old but not that old!!! :)

I started listening to OTR (old time radio) by downloading them off the internet. Now there are apps for the phones that make it super simple. There is also an XM radio channel dedicated to OTR.

Firebroad Jack Benny is a great show indeed. Did you know his wife who played Mary Livingstone in the show had horrible stage fright? When the show went to TV she did not go on it because of her stage fright.

I enjoy the detective shows most. Dragnet and Sherlock Holmes are my favorites. Also Escape shows are well written.

I liked the big band era listening to the music on the radio at my grandparents as a child, and still tuned into oldies channels as I got older. I became addicted to AM radio talk shows after 911. Rarely listen to radio or watch more than children's shows since we had lil one.....

I think it is interesting that the BBC still puts on radio plays, and they are quite popular. A shame we have let the "theater of the mind" fall by the wayside.
I have also fallen in love with the older, big band music. Maybe I am just becoming an old fuddy-duddy, but a lot of what is produced today leaves me cold.:emb:

SIRUS radio had a station, might still have it, that played old radio shows. I loved listening to them. At the time they were playing The Green Hornet.

    Where do you download them?

Radio Classics is what is on XM radio. I listen to it a lot, but I like the suspense and comedies most. It seems like they play a lot of Johnny Dollar.
I have Gracie internet radio, and I downloaded a lot of oldie stations. One of them is 20th Century Radio, another is the 1920's radio, which plays a lot of 30's and 40's music.
If you do an internet search, you can find a lot of neat stuff. I am not sure how to download the players, because Gracie does all that for me when I put in the URL.

I found some Sherlock Holmes free tonight. My son and I listened to it on the way home from dinner. I'll be delving into this deeper.

boettg33 like Firebroad said just Google old time radio or OTR and you can find mp3 files. Also for i know for android phones there are free apps. That what use all the time.

The amount of shows are huge. Just like today's TV shows the quality of acting and writing were at both extremes. Sherlock Holmes shows were a good example of that. That show was reinvented throughout well over 20 years.

Another good comedy was Fibber McGee and Molly. A married couple played the main characters.

It was not uncommon at the time for movie stars to come onto radio shows. I remember listening to Cary Grant on "Suspense" not to long ago.

Prairie Home Companion is a great show. If your are able to go to a live broadcast show. I was lucky enough to go to one a number of years ago. Great time.
