Why don't you just bust them up with a mower? I have a 1.5 acre yard, it just takes 3 passes on the mower and the leaves turn into a fine dust. It's actually done wonders for my grass too, it's much thicker and greener than when I first moved in. There isn't a chance in hell I'd spend the time to blow them! As to the push blowers like a Billy Goat, they really work best when combined with a backpack blower. I did leaf removal with a landscaping company one fall, and the best setup was 2 guys with backpack blowers and one guy with a Billy Goat. You use the back pack blowers to lift the leaves out of the grass, and then the push blower, set about 10 feet back, blasts them twice the distance that the backpack blowers alone can. But the push blowers aren't that great at getting those leaves that are tangled down in the grass.
Might not have to finish the back yard leaves HIGH WIND WARNING IN EFFECT ,THURSDAY WEST WIND GUSTS WILL REACH 50 TO 60 MPH THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH EARLY THURSDAY EVENING.
Agreed about the billy goats and their limitations in certain situations and your right, a billy goat could help in some areas but not most. Once I have the leaves blown from the slopes and ditches onto the driveway, the hard work is done and the easy part is blowing the leaves off the drive into the woods. I blow everthing from the slopes and ditches onto the drive and then can quickly blow them into the woods. I need to blow the dozen or so culverts also. Some areas are so steep, I can barely walk it with the blower. Only about 20% of the area is flat grass that can be moved. The rest is driveway or steep slope or ditches with culverts. The previous owner was mulching on the flatter grass areas and tried to blow the leaves off the driveway with a mover. It was a mess, ditches full of leaves, dead grass, plugged culverts and a driveway with weeds growing on it. I dont pretend to have all the answers, but you need to get up all the leaves from these areas or tt's a mess come spring. I have about 2000' of gravel driveway. Around the building is concrete where a lot of leaves collect, no way to do it without a blower. Even in the areas that could be mulched, the leaves are so deep, it's creates a deep level of mulched leaves, that can kill the grass. I often have close to a foot of leaves when blowing. Good news, is I only have one more last blowing left. 90% down now. Just waiting for the rest to come down.
Same here deep leaves, way too many to chop them up, lots of people have asked me why don't you just chop them up? there is just too many
Dang, that thing with probably uproot the saplings. I have thought about getting one of these type of things, many times but you still have a lot of blowing to do, to get the leaves out where you can get at them with one of them and I really don't have any place to store it
Yeah, I was looking at those again last year and found a used one on Craigslist almost bought it, but decided I wanted a log splitter that would go vertical more. Some people use their a lawn tractor and bagger to pick up their leaves but, you would be lucky to get 5 feet here before you have to empty it here.
I meant the turbine blower but the leaf trailer/vac is a backyard staple to many as well. They work well if you have a ton of ground to cover. I vacuum up leaves with my SH86 and empty the bag into my lawn cart. Dump in the woods and repeat. Once I have all the books and crannies cleared out, I switch to mulching them with the tractor and it's mulching mower deck.
oh I see, what is the CFM on that turbine deal? You ever tried to stand in front of one of the turbine deals?
A LOT, but not as much as their bigger and twin models... . That volume is what allows it to clear debris so quickly. Yep. It's damm near impossible until you get more than 10 ft from it.
Actually, if we are raking traps anyways that morning, you can drive right through them and usually clear all the leaves out of the trap in a single pass. We use it to disperse heavy grass clippings and we can clear light leaf coverage from all 20 greens and 15 fairways in under 3 hours. Also gets used in the late summer to clear aeration plugs and blow sand (top dressing) off the greens after the aeration process. We've even used it to clear light snow from the main driveways and parking lot. Helluva useful tool!
I'm gonna try that next year. Just use my lawn mower and mulch them up and leave it where it is, should be good for the grass
I prefer to mulch my leaves, but that said, I don't have several football fields covered a foot deep either! Beautify property, bud. Looks really nice with the burgundy leaves layered on it. Gonna borrow that pic!
In our neighborhood, it's apparently a race to see who can be last to clear leaves. Did the whole 1.5 acre yard already and with blowy winds, their stuff is all over my yard now. Sheesh.
