For the first time since graduating high school, I do not have a job. Actually you could go back to the beginning of my junior year when I started working on weekends during school. It's an odd feeling.

I was let go. Not fired. My company recently was purchased by Dell. Prior to the purchase, my company started reducing headcount. Part of me thinks this was in preparation of the purchase, or maybe even a term of the purchase. However; to be honest, I believe we were at the point where we needed to do some trimming. The team I worked on started with 18 people. Through some consolidations of teams in the organization we ended up with 54 people for a group that really only could sustain between 48 and 50 with the added responsibilities. In September we let 2 from our group go leaving us with 52. Yes I know you can do math. Yesterday I was the next in line.

I am or was a senior solutions architect that designs and implements server/data backups and disaster recovery plans for companies. With moving around in the company, I was the third highest paid in our group. October 3rd I went over 10 years. Everything we do counts towards our utilization. Up until two weeks ago, I was 100% utilized. Last week and this week I didn't have an engagement. Which I knew was not a good thing, and spoke with my boss last Friday to express my concerns. He's been trying to find me anything he could. Unfortunately this morning when the decision to cut more headcount came down, I was on the bench. They provided three names and I was the only on the bench. Which you can understand is a no-brainer. You don't let someone go that is on an engagement.

The good thing is that I am re-hire-able. Starting tomorrow I plan to start looking within my company to see if there are any openings in other areas that would work for me. At the same time, I am going to start looking in RI and slowly branch my search out. I did poke around quickly today and found a bunch of possibilities in other areas of the country. The nice piece is that I have 20 weeks before the paychecks stop. I do not plan to sit on my azz waiting until the 20 weeks are up.

In the meantime, some of you might already know what this means. Plenty of time to get my load of logs CSS, and work on my projects. In all, everything happens for a reason. Travel for work is not my first idea of fun. However; I'll go where I must to pay the bills. This could be an opportunity for me to find something local or maybe even change careers completely. No need to feel sorry for me. In the end this will all workout.

    You've got a great attitude.

I've been there too. You'll be better off in the end.

Making firewood is great therapy while you are off.

Well, you have the right attitude about it, so that's a start in a positive direction!
We'll be pulling for ya, knowing you'll land on your feet soon enough.... And as you also mentioned- CSS and other things need done, so there's that, too.
Keep the gang updated boettg33

Good luck in your search boettg33 ... 20 weeks is a long time to find a new path/career. Maybe it'll open up a new life you never even thought of before.

I hate that feeling. Your starting off on the right foot by staying postive. Everything does happen for a reason. Check out a site call indeed.com they have good things on there and they update it with new jobs everyday. You can add several jobs to your search so that way you can have multiple updates. Good luck with everything...

I haven't read the entire post but speaking from personal experience I'll say the same (similar) thing has happened to me twice.
It's just the way it is.
Good luck with the search and let it be known that you have much support following along with you from the FHC.

As I have said before, every thing happens for a reason. With your talent and attitude about it, I'm sure you will end up coming out of this in a much better place or position. Good luck on your journey....

God bless you brother! You sound like you've got a solid grip on the situation and a good attitude about things. I'd certainly be a bit more upset about it.

Prayers to a speedy re-hire, we're here for moral support or if we can try and help in any other way. We're all extended family here..
