Burning corn cobs and starting fires with them used to be a normal thing. However, now most of the corn gets shelled in the field and the cobs are chopped.

When I was a young lad, we burned a lot of corn cobs especially in the cook stove. We did also soak some in kerosene for starting fires but did not use this method in the stoves; only with outdoor fires.

In addition, it was common to use kerosene soaked corn cobs for "heating" things up like if gas lines on tractors froze. I remember using some a couple times in the milk house when thawing out frozen water lines. We had cement block for our milk house so no wood could catch fire where we used this tactic. Not so for a neighbor who used this to thaw out water pipes in his basement. Very expensive lesson he learned there... I've heard of others like him.

Also, using corn stalks is an old trick but most times those who had corn stalks also had cattle or hogs and used plenty of corn stalks for bedding. We tried that once but it did not go so well in the spring when it came time to clean the pens. Nasty work it was.
