Nice and comfy inside ehhh..do you shut the air down completely to get your 12 hours burns? Or do you leave it open just a bit

On med High, 2.5, fan on med High
If I shut the air off, 40+ hour burns, use that for 40° night time settings
    Shoulder season.

Where is 2.5 on your dial Dave ? I think about 3:00 is med high on mine. She will cruise just a little over a 500 deg surface temp set there. I was more than impressed with the high winds we had over the past couple days, not one hiccup and held the temp perfect where ever you set it.

This normal BD or unseasonably cold? Been warm on this side and not too many fires yet this year.

Don't let that outdoor heat wave get to you Dave. Take a bike ride.

    -11, house dropped below 70
Wife was up early, added wood with a lot of hot coals before heating the chimney,
low draft flow, smoked the house pretty good when the dry birch hit the hot coals.

Vented the house, turned the furnace on to get house to 74
Learning experience, get a good draft going before adding wood to a hot stove.
    Add wood fast

Stove cranking now, should maintain 70s,
6 mph wind now, -9, wind chill. -17

What do you do to get the pipe hot beforehand?

A cat stove doesnt' keep the chimney real hot, you need to warm it up a bit to get a good draft established.

With all the hot coals in there,
Open the bypass, stat to wide open, wait a minute,
then crack the door for a couple minutes ,
that gets a lot more hot gasses going up the flu & you get a good draft established.

Then lay the wood you want to add right beside you
you need to load all the wood in fast before the bark catches on fire
Open the door, load fast & close the door.

By the time I got down there from smelling the smoke , all was OK & the stove was up & running fine.

She didn't have enough wood to fill the stove , so left the door open while getting more wood, the bark ignited
& smoke rolled out the door. Not visibly real bad but enough we had to vent out the acrid smell, birch bark smoke smells real strong

Just took too long to get the stove filled with the weak draft..

Hopefully we don't have many more of the -11° temps to deal with.

Already down to -4° right now though :(

    Oh, I see
Really warm here for this time of year 63 today low 50 tonight, Thursday is going to start getting colder.
I have been known to pre-stack, arrange, my wood before I go putting it on hot coals.
I have a place marked out beside the stove, so I can arrange the pieces so they will fit real nice and tight,, so once I open the stove I can get it packed in there pretty good, pretty quick
