We had a loooooong hot and dry summer and early fall.

El nino is here this winter, hard to say wasssssup with that.
The rain is here in earnest now though.

Coldest we have had so far was about 35 F but its way early for real cold stuff.

    Just wet and nasty

20* at 5 am this morning. Heavy frost on the truck's windshield. Hate scraping! Love the warmth of the pellet stoves!

I have seen 29* here as a low one morning. Several lows around freezing. Mainly cool and rainy but the temps still fluctuate and warm up nicely. 59* here now and supposed to hit 65 tomorrow. Then tank this weekend. It has been much warmer than last fall.

In fact this time last year the kids and wife had a snow day and off of school. We were hit with 5-6 inches of snow last Nov 17th. I'll take the 60 degrees and not complain. I do have the 68 fired since I've been home today.

Hey Snowy, do you strictly burn shells or do you also burn pellets ?? Been so long since I read your posts in the other place I don't remember.

I am pretty sure she burns all shells. She has it figured out and no cash layout or minimal for her heat IIRC. Wish I had access to something like she does.

It gets nasty out here often. WOW am I glad for the pellet stove!! (previously 2 pre epa wood stoves). We still light a new wood insert for the frigid temps, but our pellet stove has turned into our main furnace (no furnace of any kind in the house). LOVE it :)

We run the shells in thew Whits

The Quad is a little premadonna, and will not feed the shells.

The cork screw feed in the Quad will not get hold of enough of the smaller pieces to keep the fire burning.

Soooooo, we keep a supply of pellets for the real cold times if need be, and or when we need a little "take the chill off" and we're too lazy to build a fire.

The whits have full auger flights and screw that stuff up right nicely.

The only Caviat is that the shells leave a lot of extra clinker type crap.

Just have to stir the pot every 6-8 hours or so and just before bed time.

This keeps things from backing up and the pot overflowing.

Butttttt, for the minimal cost, I can put up with a little fooling about. :D

    Thanks for the compliments.

Built the raised hearth in 2010 and did the "fake brick" on the wall with masking tape and various colors of paint.

Turned out nice at very little cost.

    The Stove was $200
The hearth, paint and mantle were couple hundred more
The vent pipe was all new.

The total cost on the two Whits was under $1000 up and running.

Can't beat those kind of numbers.

Easy to realize the break even point (Long ago)

Heating bill for an entire season is normally under $75
Will spend maybe $140 but part of that carries into the next fall to get us going.

    Snowy
