Couple questions on burning the NC30. I'm on my third fire now. Progressively larger each time and allowed it to cool all the way down between them. It's still smelling up the place with the paint offgassing. Doesn't seem to be getting better at all.

How long did the paint stink take to go away for you other NC30 users?

What stove top and stove pipe temps are good/safe.

Can't help you with the stink, I cured mine outside.

I don't like to go much higher than 750 STT. I recently installed a probe temp connected to one of the high temp alarms from auberins, my probe pipe temp tends to run about 50-75 degrees higher than STT when things are cruising along.

Every time you hit a new high temp, it'll offgas.
At some point, it'll stop.......couldn't tell ya' when.
If it's extremely cold out, I still don't run the stove more than about 700 or so. The wood will unappear too quick.:headbang:
I bought a probe for the double wall, but haven't put it in yet. May not.

Can he run a long hot burn on a warm day and open the doors and windows to ventilate? Are break in fires for paint cure or the stove?

I considered burning it outside first but decided against it for some reason. Wish I had now.

I've got doors and windows open at that end of the house with one fan bringing in fresh air and one blowing out the smoke/stink.

Just saw 700 STT with the laser and the top of the stove looked like it was steaming slightly.

I have seen that too with stove brite paint (repainted our old pre epa stove twice in 15 years), but the stove was already very old, we did not do break in fires....

If he can get the stove running on a warm day, sure.

Well, I know the paint needs to cure, and it's not a bad idea for the brick, I suppose, but not sure about the stove itself.

IIRC, we did not do break in fires with our new NC13 insert either, we waited too long for final install and blizzard was moving in that very night....

Doesn't make any difference as far as the steel is concerned. The only thing where the stove itself is concerned would be as it heats and cools, over time things tend to "take a set" to their new position/mission in life. Sometimes bending and welding steel causes internal stresses that heat helps to relieve. "Relieving the stress" is something that is sometimes done by the welder/fabricator by heating the part/product, BUT, I'm not sure that 700-800* would do a proper job of that anyways, and, I don't believe how fast the part is heated makes a whole lot of difference when dealing with steel. (except for the life of the steel long term, heating hard and fast from stone cold can deteriorate it over the years, I personally don't like to crack the door to make a raging fire right off the bat from cold for this reason)
I believe the "break in" fires are more so for stone or maybe cast iron stoves.
Speaking of stone, I wouldn't think that heating stone hard and fast from cold would be a good idea either.

    Bingo

Got it up to around 750 STT and held it there for 20 or 30 minutes. No more offgassing and the girls slowed down on the complaining. Must be getting close.

Thanks again for now. I imagine I'll have more questions later.

The wife decided to change the stove room/dining room a bit. Still need another coat of paint on the crown molding and we can put it up along with the pictures and whatever else she wants. Hope she doesn't want to paint again soon as I don't care much for painting.

Working good so far. Lots of heat and longer burns.

    Eric,
Truth is, I'd rather be somewhere else. Taxes suck and there's not much back up from tbe state if you work hard. Upstate seems to be stuck with supporting tbe city.

Anywho, I lived in West Augusta for a few years and absolutely loved it. Definitely miss Virginia.

Perhaps it's just the nostalgia of it all for me... Going to our cabin in the Catskills held some great memories for me, growing up....
