As I have shared on the shoulder wood thread, I have been burning almost exclusively maple with just a lil ash...as I continue picking up splits out of the shed that feel light as paper I couldnt resist getting out the MM Maple css in April read 0-3% exterior on original split---split again it read 18-19% Ash css in May read same on original split, re-split it ranged from 13.5-17ish
Looks ready for the stove. Sometimes I like to test a few larger, heavier weight ones as comparison. Odd that some of the fat heavies can sometimes be just as dry as the lightweights, sometimes not. Was trying to find a rule-of-thumb for size and weight to correlate to MC, but there seems to be randomness in how individual splits lose water.
NYCountry I put up approx 3 cord in April-ash, maple, beech and red oak-of course all but the red oak is good to go-I recognized that to be successful at establishing the 3 yr plan I obviously needed to concentrate on those hardwoods that would let me get there and still burn in the meantime---Other than some uglies that I havent checked yet, I will not be burning any oak, locust or hickory this year. I have 5 cord total of the aforementioned and its burning plenty hot right now. I have to think the south facing shed and expanded metal flooring has accelerated the drying time...Interesting too is that all the wood I am burning and MM has come from the back row and has received much less direct sunlight-AIR
Gark I plan to do that too-funny isn't it---while lifting out those light as a feather splits you encounter wood css at the same time that are appreciably heavier??? Will maybe test a few tomorrow and also check my oak css in March
All wood not in the shed is oak, hickory, locust and cherry---That will all be moved to the shed after seeing what remains after this season---I average burning @ 3.5-4 cord per year, 24/7 once the cold sets in---I'm sitting on 9 cord and will amp it up after hunting season-I have trees down, propped off the ground ready to go---more ash, cherry, maple, elm and some shag-bark hickory
Love that top pic ^^^ Rail stack is holding up nicely. Can't wait for hunting season to finish up for ya, so we can see more of yer stacks!
So nice you pointed that out my old friend Eric VW (VW) I was wondering while you are recuperating, and while I'm hunting,,,would you mind come filling that last bit in because it's bothering me and you? I'll throw you a steak on the grill---don't figure its anymore than a truck load CSS, just surprise me with your wood of choice...(No softies and no un-poplar though) I trust your judgement...Friend?
Hmmmm, tempting. Ifn I could just have a helper to run the saw, splitter and stack it out for ya, I'd do it! For a few deer tenderloins Not quite up to working farwood for at least the next month
I know buddy, just bustin on ya-thought we might incorporate that in to your PT plan...I'll be on it in December and fill her quick...looking for scrounge metal roofing now to cover up the stacks, that or used mining belt-will buy new if I have too---been checking the Ad-Bulletin weekly and stopping at the countless people who have had it laying on the ground for years in their yards---Nope, they're gonna use it---Really...When???
Thought I noticed some cattle mats at TSC... I know, knew but mite not be too pricey. Course, used tin would be great.
I havent seen anyone with the same meter. Probably lots of them out there... Ive liked it but had to wedge some wood behind the battery to give it a good connection. Cant complain I guess for something that cost $50. Sure is a fun tool!
This one's worked great, next one could be junk...you can pay a lot more for one but like someone said the best MM is a 3 yr plan but they are fun to play with, if you're a firewood geek...
Sorry I missed this thread yesterday. My meter is the stihl brand. In my palm it reads 36, then 21, then 40. These are back to back. I did find one of the batteries leaking, so I,am guessing new batteries will solve the problem.
X2 Used mine to verify the subfloor MC at FIL a few weeks BDHS, or BLIHR. I wish my firewood was a dry as his subfloor- 5%MC
Well I might have been a bit dramatic on the price as it was a Christmas present from my wife so really have no idea what she spent. Did yours come with a calibration chart?
No Sean just an operation manual and a padded case-Manual says it should be accurate to +/-1% I've been very happy with it, hope it holds up...
