If it's elm, red elm. But the heart grain almost looks like walnut, but the bark almost looks like oak. But the stump leads me to believe a smaller tree like ironwood.
Ding, Ding, Ding we have a winner! Sorry guys I was away for a while. Jobs to do you know. Cleared out the woods behind me and had around 4 - 5 cord of honeysuckle. I use it to burn in my shop as it makes quick heat and at least I get some good out of it. Some of them were getting pretty big as you can see. Notice the one hanging on the side of the truck. Had some close top 30 ft long. Went from this: To this. I seeded it this Summer and it has a nice grass cover. Going to start planting some trees this Spring and keep the Honeysuckle out!
That's a lot of honeysuckle wood. I have an infestation of that stuff on my property too. Did you pull the stumps or just cut flush? Did you use any kind of brush killer (other than a chainsaw, that is)? I need to clear all mine out but normally I just yank the whole thing out with a brush grubber and tractor, pile it up, wait a couple years and then burn it.
I yanked the bigger stuff out with a backhoe and the rest by hand. Cut the decent size stuff and chipped the brush. Then cut all the dead ash out of their. Smoothed the dirt and let it sit. Resmooth 6 months later and seed. It really hasn't come back yet but I'll spray Brush killer on what does. I let the grass go to seed but I'll bushhog once or twice a year and plant trees till it's back full again. Finding trees that won't be next years disease/bug victims is getting hard anymore. Treat the top of the stump immediately after cutting with Tordon or you are wasting your time. i.e. Picloram. Dow Tordon RTU Ready to Use Specialty Herbicide : Rural King
