Well the front just past through here. I figured I'd light a fire... I've never fired the stove in this type of wind (25-40 mph)... Didn't think twice. Now I WILL NOT DO IT next time. I've never seen blow back and such a hard start. I tried to let it just die out but it just smoldered and stunk the house up worse than it was already smoky looking and smelly... The fire has been blown out by the wind, and changes the fire pattern... Really kinda of interesting, if it was smelling up the house. I don't mind much, but the SWMBO will....... I'll hear about it.... ... Until then I think I'll just grab another beer... Any Advise on this? I'm sure that a lot of you have wind while using the stove.
Blowing 30 mph here now Fire burning fine , I have to turn the inlet air down a bit with the wind, it burns hotter when the wind blows. Every stove/ pipe / chimney (set-up) is different. Maybe with your set-up it's hard to get a draft going. But if you can get it drafting, get the chimney hot, it should work fine. Got any pics of the set-up ? Mine, in the basement , with double wall stove pipe & metalbestos chimney:
Basically what I ended up doing... I went got some small splitters from the splitter and got some knotted up newspaper. Finely got it going, but even after it got going, it still blew out the fire. When there was a high gust, but started back up when the wind went back down a bit. Yes, I've got a awkard pipe set up, with a couple 35 to 40 degree elbow back to back. Its a little slow to warm up, but I've never seen this though. Edit: It was rolling just nicely... Then it gusted up, the secondaries went out followed by the fire... Then as the wind went back down the fire resumed and the secondaries resumed.....Quite interesting...
You have a chimney cap They're supposed to help in the wind, something about creating low air pressure at the chimney opening ? not sure how it works.
For some reason I can't do links on this site. Just put a directional wind cap on my sisters chimney. Place called Luzury Metals. An apt name because it wasn't cheap.
I don't know, I have had the stove going in 30 40 mile an hour winds never had the fire blow out, it will act strange though
Yes, very weird... Had I known what I've seen in the last 1 hour or so. I would have just turned on the electric heat. But in the 6 years or so of burning, I've never seen this, so new things are bound to happen...every now and then....
I haven't had to try this myself yet. I'm looking forward tot he suggestions, in case I run into this in the future.
Maybe something to do with barometric pressure the wind direction or whatever. Maybe a squirrel jumped in there
Weather for KC says pressure 29.6 & rising Could be wind direction off the roof , causing a down draft on the chimney
Aw heck, if you can afford to turn on the electric heat you can afford a directional wind cap. Should pay for itself in ahh,, like one day Sis had hers made out of copper with custom tails. That really drove the price up.
