Angled back cut is going to cause more problems than a level one if it sets back. The wedges can't lift on that angle and are going to try to break the hinge as it pushes the tree forward more than up. If you'll pay for shipping I'll send you a couple wedges to try out. You'll have to get your own axe to drive them.
Charlie posted a good one that is very simple to explain and do. Call me Sav any time. I even answer to, "Hey you!" But I answer best to, "Dinner's ready." Get a couple of plastic wedges but do not try to drive them like a steel wedge. A light hammer will do the trick nicely and then you mostly tap them in, just to keep them going in the right direction.

Gasifier, hope you don't take offense ... someone showed me over 30 years ago and I still continued to learn from other people I worked around on different tree crews I was on over the years... In fact I had one foreman that would walk up a hill and check your cuts after dropping some critical trees... He was tough and wanted good even hinge wood when it was a straight forward drop.. Well it made me aware of my cuts and taught me well... I think we just want to make your job of cutting a lot easier and safer as well... Everyone here cares that you stay safe, otherwise no one would even bother saying a thing... Then you can teach the next guy down the line,,,, maybe your Robin Hood guy
Always back up the rope/cable/chain with wedges. You never know what can happen before the tree commits and could end up backwards on top of what you were trying to avoid. I think I have some that will fit in a small flat rate box for $6.
Gas, plastic wedges are cheap at any saw shop, TSC and some hardware stores even carry them. I've even seen them at Lowes and HD. And you already have a good tool to drive them in.

Only one ton in the 'yota? I keep pestering my BIL to let me pick up his next 2 tons of pellets. Just so I can get a shot of the old beast with 2 tons of pellets in her.

Great thread. I enjoy seeing your work Gas and like the Bobcat pictures! Also appreciate the discussion on tips and techniques for dropping trees. I'm experienced with cutting downed trees but limited experience when it comes to dropping them. Makes me nervous everytime I drop a tree. I leave the big ones that are close to our house or other structures to a local tree guy that knows what he's doing.
Well..... If I am nervous about cutting a tree, I won't cut it. But it is just like the saw; respect it but don't fear it.
