Any guesses on what's at the top of and towards the back of the stack? There is some ash mixed in there for sure, but I don't know what the other stuff is.

    All guesses appreciated

The thick red bark makes it look like Sassafrass to me. I've never seen a locust tho.
Crack it open and share a pick. Sass will have a greenish sheen to it.

My guess is sasafrass as well, but looking from my phone. If so, it would have had a distinct smell during cutting, lower on the btu chart, sparks a lot and would be good for SS. I believe the root is used to make sassprilla.:D

You can make Sassafrass tea also. I've had it but that was many many years ago. Mostly made from the green new growth twigs. Can't remember if there were any leaves involved.

This came from a timbered top. I was lucky enough to get a list of the harvested trees/quantity. There is no sassafras or locust on the list (not that this means it couldn't be). I'll split a piece tonight and post a better picture

What is on the list? That would help getting a better idea. Basswood maybe?

Concretegrazer you may have it.... It's heavy, split easy and stinks like oak. I also looked at the timber report and they did take 8 burs off the property!

Bur or Pin oak. Definitely has a similar bark to it.
