Hi there, My name is Chris. Been lurking in the background for sometime now. Signed up a week ago, and just got around to making my intro post. Sorry for the long post! To give you a little background on myself. I live in Noblesville Indiana which is just Northeast of Indianapolis. I have lived in my house ( vinyl village) for 12 years now, with my wife of 13 years and our 4 year old son, dog and 3 cats. About this time last year my wife decides to let me start using the fireplace. I don't have a fancy insert or a high efficiency wood stove, just a simple insert with some cheap glass door on it. By the time I am able to locate any firewood it is barely seasoned ( but it was cheap, I guess you get what you pay for!). But it got me through the winter. I started looking for a good source to supply my future burning needs. I was able to secure 2 locations that have nearly unlimited wood, all I have to do is cut it and split it.....for FREE! One location is a property that a doctor that my wife works for ( 5 acre wooded lot), she just had 3 trees downed that she said I can have as much as I want. There are 2-3 ash trees that need to come down soon, along with other dead standing trees on the property. The other spot is a Church retreat area (15+ acres heavily wooded) that I know the care taker, and said if its dead ( standing or fallen) it's fair game. Also this area sits in the bend of a major river that has tons of trees that get washed up after any big storm that goes through the area. My equipment may not be up to par with some of your guys stuff, but hey I am just getting started and I have the fever. I purchased my first chain saw a few months ago. I picked up a 16" Poulan saw from Lowe's and for the amount of wood I cut it will do for now. Last winter I bought a Fiskars x25 axe, which I am very happy with. You might be thinking how much wood do I burn? Last winter I went through about a cords worth ( MAYBE ). From what I can tell you guys like pictures and have a fun time identifying wood species. This is some wood that I cut up about 3 weeks ago from my small honey hole. Not sure what I have here.
I've been through your area a few times welcome to the forum. You won't find s better bunch than here You already off to a good start posting pics it's like opening Christmas gifts around here we all love pics

Welcome to the land of wooden heads! Lots of good advice hear from lots of good folks. Sounds like da bug dun bit ya! The good news is days no cure fur dat bite! You be careful with those dead standing trees, they don't react the same as live trees. Day can fools a feller and a fooled feller can be a dead feller!
Welcome to FHC! I think you may have a mix of maple and hickory there. Others will chime in as well. Any leaf pics at all?

Thank you all for the kind words. I have learned SO much in the few weeks since I have found this site. I hope to get a Husky or Stihl saw sometime in the spring next year. I have about a 1/4 of the wood I need so far css. I hope to get on the two year plan. My only problem is storage, but I have a few ideas rattling around in my head. Here is a pic of the fireplace. And what I have css so far, just shy of a ric of wood.
Hey Silentgarth, welcome, welcome. As a relative newcomer myself, I've been nothing but amazed at such a good group of folks in this club.
Welcome to the FHC Chris. My brother lives round there, so I have been nearby a few times. That Poulan will cut alright as long as you keep the chain sharp. I had one for a while and I have its bigger brother now. Who is the handsome gent on your mantle? Greg
That would be a porcelain bust of Elvis. My wife decorates him according to the season or holiday. Don't ask.
