I wouldn't want to be burning it this time of year, i like my house to be cool enough that i can be inside it.
This year I use mostly maple all winter with a mix of ash if needed. Ash will be my over night mixed with hickory. Then if it gets cold hedge. By this time next year should have about 5 cord of hedge to use when I want.
Seems like when i do that i have less of a fire and more of a smoulder. I can put in 3-5 pieces of maple and have a lovely little fire. Works better for us, anyway.
I generally don't light a fire unless it gets down into the upper twenties, I use mostly small diameter stuff. Under 3" limbs I've cut, once it gets down to the lower teens to single digits we're burning oak, hickory and cherry. When it gets down to below zero and stays there for a while we burn shorter blockier splits and build up 8 or so inches of coals from oak that just keep the heat going through the night. When it gets down to 15 to 20 below zero I set the alarm at 3:00 to reload the stove, just to save the pipes, we leave the water running a little then so the pump kicks on. At that point it seems you just can't bring wood in fast enough. I think Stinney would agree.
Whatever seasoned softer wood I have in the stacks thanks to Mother Nature and cutting a few undesirable saplings. This year, it's sycamore, cherry, Aspen, tulip, maple and sassafras. Here's the main stack.... Lots of small rounds too...
Right now it's Norway maple, ash, a little beech and black birch and red oak. When it gets colder it'll be oak, black birch, beech and Norway maple. There's some shagbark hickory in the next stack so that'll get into the mix about January. That is unless temperatures stay the way its been lately, then I'll get into that sometime next fall.
Hedge is A hard wood and it is HOT. Around here we use to use them for fence posts but the ground would where out first. Look up Osage Orange. Here it is in the rack , the orange stuff. If you ever get any make sure the chain is sharp because it will not be after you cut a tank of gas. It will look like you been cutting rocks
