Dang - not liking the idea of snow yet. 65 here today - about the same tomorrow - lows in the 40's. Beautiful fall weather for getting work done. Really hoping for a mild winter - at least less snow - don't mind the cold. So much wood to process in the woods and lots more to drop - if the weather keeps light this year, will have about 10 more cord put up - come on El Nino! Cheers!

Good question Gonna be real close, what's left in rounds needs to be 2-1/2 cord A lot of the wood has punky centers, old growth stuff & big. Gonna be quite a bit of waste , uglies & punky stuff. If the weather had held , I would've liked one more load This snow keeps me out of the cutting area, couple hills & down hill with turns pulling over 6000 lbs scares me , trailer or PU slides , could get ugly. Maybe it melts & I can get one more trip
I'm with ya. I do my best work horizontal. With my bad back and crushed sciatic I could never split vertical for more than an hour. My leg would be numb and cramping. To each their own but vertical acts like a torture chamber to me. It hurts just looking at it. Nice pics of the wood and snow tho. Bring it on.
Wet . Stuck to the wood, to my boots, trailer tires....everything, was a PIA. Drying out some today, was 28° last night, 31° now Settled down to about an inch. might be gone in a few days
No way I could lift the big round up to the splitter, I'd have to get a log lift. Anything over about 12" I call rollers, roll them on & off the trailer. Before back surgery , I worked on my knees, now I can sit & split pretty comfortable, but no way I could lift the heavy stuff all day. The Husqy log tongs help a lot too, less bending when picking wood up off the ground. Roll to the splitter, that's why I want to try HDRocks idea of a 2x12 in front of the splitter foot, should be even easier to roll onto the splitter. 99.5% vertical splitting for me
Darn it, looks like you are loosing daylight at a very rapid rate. that link you put on your sig. say you will loose an hour in the first 12 days of this month.
Tried the plank in front of the splitter foot Works real good Thanks for the tip Punky centers on almost all the big rounds. Some are worse than others. Real heavy & wet , frozen now so many times the come out easy. Goes to the uglies pile,
2 things I was thinking about doing, , make it a little thicker, screw on some 1/2" boards and putting some big spikes through it , at each end ,to shove into the ground to keep it in place
I was thinking the exact same thing . Great minds ................ It gets moved around when splitting Was gonna drill a few hole & add some 6" spikes If the ground isn't froze

Yeah , maybe more than 2 spikes , 4 or 6 I would think a couple whacks would put the spikes into frozen ground
