Oooooo rabbits are on my pet wishlist. Somehow my SO approved of tarantulas, but not rabbits! Well, at least I have the green light to build a chicken coop. Backwoods, I thought about the blocks but I am trying to leave it open under there. It is sagging but I think it will hold up. Anything I put on the ground critters think they can dig and make a home under it. This way my dogs can look under there and hopefully keep the critters away. Omg, if I leave a pile of splits on the ground for more that a few days the critters try to make a home out of the pile. Way out back I don't care so much but these stacks are close to the house.
I can see you have neighbors, please, if you haven't, call the town/city office and ck for restrictions. It is very common to outlaw farm animals, or to have a restriction on the number of chicken, or to prohibit roosters. Chicken can be a lot of fun and not too much work. I tried it both for eggs and meat. Eggs won out. For meat, it was a disaster. I would love to do the chicken thing again. Might be able to now that my son's family lives here.
Good Lookin' wood rack you've set up, bowing a bit... but it'll only bow sooo low...... Chickens are characters... Yesterday I was collecting eggs and knocked off one of my girls off the nesting box. And for the next five minutes she let me know how she disapproved of that...squawker she was...
Split n stacked a half cord of red maple. You guys are right, it splits like a dream... even the knots!
My small person loves the Stihl splitting hatchet. She is busting up chunks and cookie cut offs. Start 'em young!
Dusky, teach her to have the hands closer together as she brings the hatchet down to the wood. Hands far apart like that steals leverage!
I will do that. Been teaching her accuracy is more important than strength, so she has been trying to hit the cracks she is aiming at instead of trying to kill the wood. We have a little collection of wood cubes she has chopped out of the cookies, she likes making art out of the pieces. At least I have her outside doing something, these days kids are slaves to their electronics. Small victories!
Good for you. Accuracy is important for sure. Accuracy with the hands together is even more important. She will do fine. Keep your eye on the spot too! Make certain when the axe is lifted, it is lifted in the center of the body and not off to one side as this is perhaps the most important for accuracy. Good luck.
She's a cutie Dusky. Good on ya' for getting her outside and doing something. I was gonna' say she's free labor, but anyone with kids knows they don't come free.
L Looks like red maple. If unsure ... ask Clint Hurdle ... wisest man on the planet. Go Bucs! (saw Roberto Clemente play at Forbes field in '58 so may be a bit prejudiced).
