Not necessarily the tree service truck but the chipper. Nothing more depressing than watching them stuff 10 to 12 inch diameter pieces in there. This is what I woke up to this morning across the street. When they go on break I'm going to go ask whoever is in charge if they are taking the entire tree down or just trimming. It's a 50 to 60 foot maple with a 36 to 40 inch trunk.
My buddy runs a tree service. Often they drop trees and the customer says to leave it and they will take care of it. More often than not, they call back a couple weeks or more later and ask for them to return and remove the tree. He offered to let me know when this happens so I can go get free wood. Ir's more of a pain for him to send a crew back.
i hate it to ,saw this a couple months ago i got most of this tree but a lot of good stuff was chipped
I went out at the right time. The owner happened to be there checking things out. The tree was only being trimmed but he said he will drop wood off when he gets some. He lives around the corner and down the street a little bit and is familiar with my house because the previous owners took down 12 trees. So maybe I've got a wood hook up.
Just got the house last year. Haven't gotten to the landscaping phase yet. Probably next year. Going to contact him in a month or so to take down an oak and grind a stump. I'll wait until it gets to be like December because that's when business dries up for those guys.
Seems like a shame that they get chipped. But a good opportunity for some guys to get some good easy to get to Firewood ! Go get em boys !
I'll bet that all those wood chipping machines are secretly funded by oil companies...... All part of their evil plan!
Much as I hate to see them machines eating whole trees that could go in my stacks. Do get some satisfaction in resharpening those blades, so all is not lost for me.
I agree completely! I see them chip almost everything. Wouldn't you think they could sell off the smaller trees as a load of firewood to someone?
Some of them do around here. However it depends on the size of their property that they operate off of. Some have space to store and process wood, some don't.
I've been helping a friend who does tree work we take everything down to 1 1/2" to 2" for firewood and either chip or leave the rest but I hate to see that big stuff going through the chipper always... Thought about buying a pellet mill to use our chips to eliminate all waste too
It really doesn't bother me so long as the tree guys keep bringing me the nice straight trunks. I especially like it when there are no crotch pieces.
I have to admit, when I got my 12" disc chipper back in '98 I chipped anything that would fit in there. Even had a guy stop by one day and ask me why I was chipping all that good firewood. I told him if he wanted to take it all I would stop running it through and leave it for him. He said he didn't have time for that but I could take it to his house and dump it; 15 miles away. That just wasn't cost effective for me. It was quicker and easier to run it through and dump the chips about 2 miles away. As far as selling firewood? By the time I paid a crew to cut it up, haul it back to the shop, split it, load it back on a truck and then deliver it, I would have had to sell it for $350- $400/cord in order to show even a meager profit. That doesn't take into account the wear and tear on the equipment. That was just salaries and all the taxes involved with salaries. Nope. Just chip it. Now that all changed in '06 when I decided to start heating with wood and did the processing myself.
