well i got the 427 up and run'n, also got my 228E 9/62 b-day lantern done, not sure if i'm going fire it though........
came across a nice vintage blue Coleman water cooler/jug on the cheap this morning, blue seams to be a bit harder to find around here, i usually only see green and red ones............. .......now just how hard will it be to find the matching big cooler?, either one would be a cool find.............
How aromatic are the kero lanterns. I am thinking about getting one just to be different. I just never have been around one and don't want something that is going to be fragrant enough to give me fume headaches.
Had to go out to yard shed with no lights....perfect excuse to play with lantern and it would not pump up. Tried oiling but that's a no go. Any of you used the neoprene cups? Should I stick to leather?
i'd check your fuel cap gasket first, if it's ok then move on to the pump area, sometimes the check ball sticks, a good shot of carb cleaner usually does the trick, i personally like the leather pump cups...............as far as the kero, i haven't run my kero lamp yet, so i don't know how bad it may smell, but from what i've read they're not supposed to be bad.........
well, i thought i was buying an early Coleman, but it turned out to be a Economy 408, not sure if i'm happy or upset, either way, it looks like it should clean up nicely, a pic of mine and one from Terry's site.........
Another newbie question. If you do not have the correct mantle for a lantern will it harm the lantern or just won't run right? Too big vs too small what happens either way?
won't really harm anything, but you should try to stay with the right size mantle for whatever the CP (candlepower) is of the lantern.........
here's a pic of the 408 after clean up, had to pull it back down to unplug the fuel valve, hope to have it burn'n later today..........
found this near new condition model H today, light cleaning, fresh fuel, new mantles, cleaned the check valve, and were off and running!!, nice one for less than 20 bucks!!...........
Looking for advice and previous experience. I am new to the Colemanl lantern scene. Picked one up in a bigger town and got a quart of Coleman Fuel. Thunk I should get more cuz once my tank runs out I'm out. None to be found in town and closest option is 50 miles away. Local store said they can order some in but only can get a 6 pack and I need to take it all. Don't need that much. Can I run something else in a 220J? Denatured alcohol, vm&p naptha, paint thinner, polyurethane, rubber cement or nail polish remover. Are there any good alternative fuels?
might check to see if white gas is available at any of your local or not so local fuel stations, i've used unleaded fuel in some of mine, but it decreases the life of the generators.......
My developing addiction has a new fix. My lack of restraint and a deal on Ebay lead to this showing up today. I was having difficulty finding a old kerosene model so I went new.
Went out n played with the lantern igot from old 040. Fired right up with out as much as a hickup. Thanks old 040!
Curious about any experience with the Wenzel lanterns any of you may have played with. I know they are commie clones but do they work or what issues have you run into? Should I save for a Petromax and not bother with Wenzel? Are Petromax that superior to Coleman?
I'm not familiar with the Wenzels, i did run across a nice Petromax and considered buying it, but after asking some questions about them, I decided to stick with my Coleman's..........not saying anything bad about them, but they seam to be a little over the top for me and a little more complicated, and I just kinda like the American made lanterns/lamps a little better.......
I am starting to think I have the bug. Just added another model to my line up. This one really reminds me of the lanterns my grandpa had at his lake cabin in Minnesota. They never had a tv and only got electricity in the 70's. 228 D. B. 48
