Public/State land, yes. Yes cut anything in the cutting area, dead birch are rotten , there is some nice dry spruce there but I try to get all birch, much higher BTU $10/cord have to buy at least 3 cord, up to 10 cord per year:

Have seen you post that about the BTU ratings of the species before, but I just happened to look at what that is comparable to around here. Birch would be about like white ash or red oak and the spruce would be like cherry so it wouldn't be too bad to burn. Now of course the 3 different charts I have saved are all over the board on their ratings. I think the Log Rack seems to be close in my experience for this area.
If birch is close to red oak thats pretty good. I knew the spruce had to be better than our pine or else it would be pretty poor hearing species.
