I haven't noticed any mice in the house for a few years(knock on wood), but for a while every October I would hear one scritching around the attic. Now, this happened three years in a row that I know of: I would hear one behind a wall stud that was between the hallway closet and the back bedroom. What happened is that it was prancing around the attic, and fell down between the studs. You could hear it trying to get back up, but for some reason would fall back down.
Now, I was not about to drill holes in the wall, and that section had an electric light switch in it. I didn't want the bugger to chew up the wires, so I dropped one of those poison packets down there behind the switch housing. It got a lot less active, and in a week or less, I could smell the corpse. I figure there must be at least three skeletons in there by now.
Another time I got one in the dryer exhaust(before I changed to a mouse-proof vent), I just turned the dryer on and went to bed, that took his baked carcass out the next day.

Just this afternoon my wife informed me I have an old wastebasket in one of the barns. She went in and something smelled really bad. Found 2 dead ones in the wastebasket. Been there for a while because not much left of them. Needless to say, the wastebasket got left outdoors.

We've had problems in our garage for 2 years with holes being dug up, finally got decent rat traps and have caught 6 in 3 days, hoping it slows down soon
