dusky , ahem, I seem to not be able to see any pics this morning. Perhaps your computer is malfunctioning?
Willow is sometimes referred to basswood around here, or "cr@p wood", refers to any softer deciduous tree with rounded or leathery leaves that reeks worse than elm when cut. Can be useful if you don't have a reliable access to harder woods. I'd take a load of sugar pine before I'd accept a load of willow, all be it I wouldn't turn down a load of willow either.
Definitely seeing some cherry and red maple, good btu's, and red maple splits like a dream, even when it's knotty.
Wow. There is a terrific difference between bass and willow! Strange that it is called that around your area.
Basswood is a catch all for softer shedding trees around here I think. Sometimes I see Red maple referred to as basswood, but from what I understand Willow is a softer hardwood, a btu similar to pine or hemlock. Or is this just a misconception in my area?
Willow is one of the poorest woods you can burn. I believe it has to be below pine and hemlock. Terrible stuff.
I'm so far ahead on my wood stores that I pretty much only keep the REALLY good stuff anymore. Oaks, locust, hickory, ash, sugar, red, and Norway maple. I want to maximize my space with the best stuff I can get. The rest I get rid of, I do keep spruce for carving..... But willow, popple (aspen), and several others are waterhog trees that stink badly when burning. Not much BTU's and it takes up the same amount of space as the good stuff....
Mostly Red Maple in my area, not a bad firewood all in all, burns decent and dries quicker than oak. Overall red is pretty good, and so is cherry.
