Kind of like the Fiskars and 8lb Maul, both are useful in the lineup. H buck for the small stuff makes for a quick pile, and the Shawn Curry super duper deluxe sawbuck for the bigger guys. The thing I like about those old Stihls is they aren't stingy with the bar oil. 038 Mag back with a vengeance.
your H-buck is better thought out than mine. Cut marks on mine are just to the left of the uprights and more than a few times a round on top will pull forward and slap the chain brake. Nice saw pose
I've been scratching my head how everybody else seems to be able to cut their wood exactly the right length. HECK of a lot easier than that 12" ruler I've been using! (actually, I eyeball it and get fairly close, but the H looks way easier for lots of small pieces)
Use your bar on bigger pieces - just make a scribe or sharpie mark(if you are really cutting to 12") tip of saw to mark round and buck so-forth bogydave has a magnetic length measuring device for the bush the H-bucks are great for all the small-medium bolts that don't deserve cutting in the woods
The 12" was a wisecrack. My goal is 18" which I very roughly measure by eye or holding the saw sideways, which I think is what you mean above? But I always wind of with piles of forearm and smaller branches that would make great shoulder season firewood or even fill up the empty spaces in the firebox with bigger splits. But it takes nearly as long to setup and cut a 4" diameter branch as it does a 12" piece, the bigger wood gets done first. This simple buck just might make that work a lot easier.
yeah when you are marking logs with the bar just touch the tip of the saw juice it and score the bark, move every third mark and make a full/partial cut for 18" bolts. Build a saw buck to handle 54" bolts (manageable size) and cut all your small stuff approximately that size - any that stick out too far lop them off before you cut the rest and those are uglies for the shoulder season - don't over think it too much firewood will burn as long as it fits in your stove
Saw bucks look good. Here is the one I made. Suggest using PT wood, as the first one I made rotted and fell apart.
Here is one more way and it is how we like to mark our logs. I cut a 4' stick (whatever is handy when a new one is needed) and paint or just mark a line 16" and 32" on the stick. The stick is cut to 4' which gives me 3 marks before moving the stick along. (You can see the stick laying on top of the log. I painted the ends with red paint in case it gets lost in leaves or snow. Easier to find that way. The crayon is just logger's crayon and we have a nice holder for it which keeps the crayon from breaking. It is handy and is basically what we used to use when logging many years ago. It worked then and works now although sometimes rather than the crayon we just draw a line with the axe but it is harder to see.
Does that guide just hold on to the bar magnetically? If so does it ever fall off or move on the bar?
Yep, used it yesterday, It' part of a 2 meter mobile antenna, magnet , stays right there, mark the log the whole length, pull it off , cut rounds all 17"
