I know exactly what you mean. Ive always lived in the mountains and find the closeness of them to be like a comfortable blanket. Ive had some who are used to the flat lands move here and find the closeness of them to be suffocating. Each to their own I guess. If you were in Glacier you probably went through Waterton as well which is 2 hours from here. When I was a bit younger I used to go waterfall ice climbing there every winter. Now thats pretty! I did some in Banff, Canmore and other places as well.

Yup me to. We burn lots of lodgepole pine and some fir as well. Larch is like gold here and costs and arm and a leg if you have to buy it. I can never shake the feeling that I have to use it sparingly as I never know when my areas will run dry of it.

  I feel the same way! When I see the Larch go in the stove, if it is not bitter cold night out, I feel it is somehow wasted.

No larch here Sean but here are a couple pictures you might enjoy. The maple picture was taken just a couple days ago, The eagle was not one of my pictures but I liked it so much it got saved.

Also, I have to say this has been the absolute worst year for color here I've even seen. Yes, we've had some good color but very spotty and then all the high wind we've had in October took leaves down way too fast.

Its amazing how red your maple tree is! and you were able to get some stacks in the picture  I can see why you like the one with the eagle! Thats a great picture. I was trout fishing on a small lake once and saw an eagle dig its talons into a fat trout. It couldnt lift off so it flapped its wings in the water until it was able to paddle to shore where it dragged it up into the bull rushes and ate it. I wouldnt have believed it if I hadnt seen it.

That's some pretty scenery there Sean! There is a Cedar that will drop it's green in the fall, we had a beautiful one about 60' tall and our first fall/winter there I thought that it had died when it went bare. Happy suprise when spring came around. Wifey say's it was a Red Dawn Cedar.
edit, now she thinks it may be a Cypress of some sort and my lovely hughesnet connection is too sleepy this AM. to check it out.

Our fall colors aren't as dramatic as in other regions, but this year so far has been the most colorful I can remember. The oaks usually just turn brown, but this year their colors are really bold. Even the sycamores have color to them. Went out for our yearly leaf color drive today around the neighborhood and it was like a natural fireworks display.

Here at the house, we're in a river valley and most trees haven't fully peaked yet.

These are all oaks, down the road from us. This driveway was used in the movie rainman.
    I believe they're pin oaks.

Had to include this pic, since it had someone's load of firewood in it.

This is my favorite woods around here and I look at it every time I drive by, no matter what season.
My wood cutting area is just over the hill from here.

Thats interesting. It sounds like you have moved or don't have it anymore? If you narrow it down Id be curious to hear what kind of tree it is.

Sean, I saw an eagle about 2 weeks ago. It was eating on a deer carcass in an open field. Several years ago we also had an immature eagle land right across the road from us. I could get within about 6 feet of it. It flew away only one time and the wingspan was fantastic! What a sight being so close to it.

One of my favorites from Michigan. This is the Cut River Bridge, west of St Ignace, MI.

I still have the property (but have moved) and can't remember what I was told it was called, that may have not been correct anyway. Looking a little on the net. and it may be a Dawn redwood, but the names I mentioned earlier were what I thought I was told. I looked at our Larch or Tamarack this afternoon and they are just starting to yellow out on the inside, but the red maples are bare, the Hard Maples and Beech are bright yellow and the Oaks just starting to get a little color.

Very nice! I live in a beautiful area but you all have shown me some great colours that are just stunning! Flamestead have you wet a line in that lake? If so what are you catching there? Looks like a nice peaceful place to hang out at.

Sean, no line on this trip, but have caught some nice Smallmouth, and a few Pickerel. It was meadows, dammed in the 40's or 50's. Lots of tree stumps in parts. Shallow, so warm in mid summer. Nice place to see loons, too.

    Stratton mountain to the south.
    DSC05283.JPG

Here are some of the tree remnants. Whole place is limited to 5mph, so nice paddling.

Around here our fall colors come on slowly so that by the time the last maple has turned all of the oak leaves are on the ground. In more severe climates the change happens quickly, which gives the beautiful color display I grew up with in Quebec.
