It was too wet to get up on the hill and cut yesterday. I was slipping and sliding before I even tried to climb it. Split wood all day instead. Climbed right up the hill today. Dropped one tree and cut up a few that the owner pushed over. I'm not used to cutting and loading this much wood and it's taking it's toll on my arms and shoulders, but I keep pushing myself to get more, because when it's gone that's it and I don't know if or when I'll get more free wood. Today's load is a little under a half cord.
About 5 cords, not even halfway to where I want to be. I'm surprised how most of the trees have disappeared from the hill I'm cutting on. When I first went up there, there were dead trees everywhere. It's getting really sparse up there now and it's just me and a few others up there cutting and they're up there a small fraction of the time that I am.
Today's load is a solid half cord, stacked and packed. Taking a break until at least Sunday to give my back a rest. Going to split this load straight out of the trailer to save some work.
Today's load is 1 tree and it came down with a crash. All thrown in, but I think it might be about a half cord still. Wife and I got up there at 10:00, got home by 12:30. This tree is ready to burn, so I'm going to leave this year's wood in the shed and use the wood from this and a few other burnables for this winter. That way I won't have to replace the wood in the shed.
Nice going. That's using your wits. Gotta get as much as you can..the early bird gets the worm..always nice to cut dead stuff and throw it right into the stove...I usually get to do that when I go to my neighbor's lot and take the dead stuff so I don't have to go into my pile
If you don't have dead ash near you, you will soon. It's everywhere I look. Just gotta find the people that will give it to you.
No we do, actually just started the treatment process on some in back of house... But have several others close to dead, holding out hope....
Smaller than usual, but I might be burning it this winter and want it to be good and dry. The fatties are going back in the wood shed.
Went to the wood farm today for a small load. As I was closing the gate to the pasture, the owner yells down to me that he has one pushed down on top of the hill for me. Cut it up and it was just the right size for the GC. Probably could've fit a few more. There was another guy up there cutting, down the hill from me and he starts cutting on this tree I've been avoiding that has a snaky trunk making it hard to tell which way it's going to fall. Sure enough, his saw gets stuck about halfway through the back cut. Let him use my sledge and wedges, but he still couldn't get the saw out. Older guy that was with him gets his saw out and cuts a new hinge above the first hinge. Tree fell the other way when he was still cutting the hinge. Their tree cutting skills didn't seem to be the greatest, not that mine are much better.
I've been splitting between the days that I cut and have 3 cords split from this source so far. There are 3 cords in the stacks next to the jeep, in the pic. I have close to another cord in other stacks. Don't know what that will add up to after splitting. Gotta keep going back for more.
That guy is taking care of you...make sure you take care of him. I know you mentioned a gift card, but you might as well offend him with cash. I know the type well. No offense. Here's a thought: old men like hats...they just do. He has a Kubota and a chainsaw. Pick him up a Kubota/Stihl/Husqvarna hat. If he looks like the hunting type, get it in Camo.
