Looking at a local C/L posting today for some free rounds ( this is how I get all my wood) Looks to be some type of hardwood but not sure what type, just want to be sure it is not crappy willow, poplar or cottonwood

So I send off a email asking what type of tree it was and I get a response from the owner/operator of the tree service that took it down saying "leaf Tree".. gee that narrows it down

Free firewood, first come, first served. Wood is on the side of the house, past the gate. You may carefully park on the lawn, but do not tear up the grass.

Looks like some type of maple but can't for sure. I have no idea what trees you have in your area! Too bad the leaves aren't more clear.

Worth a stop grab some rounds and a few leaves if it isn't too far. Hard to see in the pic but it some of that looks like vines on the ground

Doesn't look like cotton wood to me, grooves in the bark too shallow. I think its a maple of some sort as well.

Ours does too but the bark doesn't look like cottonwood in the pictures.

Could it be some sort of hickory?

If you go pick it up thank the tree guy for the smart azz response by knocking on the homeowners door and telling him the craigslist ad said he would help load.

was thinking it could be maple, but that heart wood is pretty dark and our bigleaf maple is not that dark. and I think the leaves on the ground came off the tree and they do not look like maple leaves. here is a couple pics of our maple. bark does look close though

So when I got the reply that it was a leaf tree, I sent a sarcastic response of "thanks for narrowing it down" back to him

he just now emailed me back saying it is Poplar. Glad i did not go get any of it

basically the same thing as cottonwood here, not like the yellow poplar that is back east and a little higher btu

I have a very limited area to store and stack firewood so i got to be somewhat picky on what I bring home. I do not want to waste the stacking space on low ranking firewood

I don't know if a guy that ID's a species as a 'leaf tree' has a fundamental grip on whether or not it is a poplar. I'm going out on a limb here and going to guess honey locust based on the look of the heartwood and the bark.
    But what do I know?

*edit* On second look at some of the smaller rounds, I do see some lighter, smoother bark. Could be poplar. Heck, it could be Wenge

At first the wood looked to me like boxelder, I don't know if you have that out there. But then I saw the leaf and don't recognize it, it sure ain't a boxelder leaf.

My west coast ID skills are pretty bad, but that leaf looks maple-ish. Dunno.

"Leaf Tree" - is that a West Coast thing? Basically the equivalent of how folks back East call any tree with needles, a "Pine Tree"? :) No clue on the ID though.
