I got a small load of maple tonight also! Question though, we usually burn oak or hickory around here,(Ozarks), and I'm not too familiar with burning maple. Is silver maple good fire wood? I've got a chance to cut 2-3 truckloads if I want it, so I probably will, but hate to waste my time if its not very good.
What do you think? Grab it or leave it?

I'd take it. There's a lot worse wood.

Silver Maple is not oak or hickory by no means but it is still good burning wood. I used quite a bit of it last year in the evenings after work or on the weekends when I could load the stove a little more......could get a real nice 6 hr burn and some darn good heat.

Silver maple is like 16 mbtus a cord, oak is 24 mbtu per cord, and hickory 28 or more mbtus. Silver maple is a lower btu wood, but its still good. Heck, I took Free basswood, which is only 14 mbtus a cord. Burn it, you'll like it.

American elm is good firewood, much better than Chinese elm. But it is a pita to split. Hydro's only.
