Bogydave brought up a good point in another thread.

The coldest Outdoor Air Temp I've endured is only about -6F. To me that's COLD.

ETA: And record lows for your area.

Record low for my area was -24 in 1899. That would have been hard to deal with before insulation was invented.

It was -19 Monday night when we were bringing the doll house over from Dad's to put under (near) the tree. I remember -40 forecasted when I was in 6th grade, not sure if it manifested.

I camped out once when it was below -30. We were ice climbing so we weren't exactly unprepared for cold. I had something like Dinty Moore beef stew for dinner. You had to eat it out of the pot on the stove or it just froze. We thought we were smart buying a warm 6 pack, you couldn't get it out of the bottle fast enough before it froze in the neck. Sleeping was a bit uncomfortable, especially because you had to keep your boots on (liners on double boots). We knew better than to take them off. We didn't go climbing the next day, it was too damm cold. Got into the car and left.

It was about -40 f on the mountain radar site near Finland Minnesota. I was a medic there. Wife got frost bite in the house. The site commander there told us to to conserve our heating oil because we not get any more if we ran out before the next delivery. We had no idea how to judge how much to safely use . We had ice on the walls around the windows. When they came to fill our tank, we were told we still had a half of tank of oil left. We had to dig a tunnel in the snow to get to the outside tank.

The coldest I've experienced at my house was -14F a few years back. One of my living room windows cracked that night.

I think the lowest recorded temperature for my area was -42. I remember many times having -25 overnight. Some of those nights I was working the midnight shift in Massena, NY about 10 years ago or so. There were many nights straight, like a couple weeks worth of lows in the 20 below zero range. Starts getting uncomfortable then. Too cold.

When my wife and I first got married it was -25f one morning. Her old car wouldn't start, my old truck (65 Chevy and this was 1987) started but the shifting lever wouldn't move.

Dug a kid out of a car wreck one night. Of the three hospitals in the area with helicoptors, none were flying. His injuries weren't really life-threatening, but it was a technical extrication that took 45+ minutes. That was after arrival, so figure close to an hour after the crash. He was a little chilly.

-12 when I left the house, -26 when I got home. Bunker gear does a good job of keeping heat out, not so good at keeping heat in.

For real fun, try fighting fire at those temps. Actually never have that cold, but there were a few -10s. Miserable, wet, icy, frozen stuff everywhere.

Can't find the coldest recorded temp for where I live now but this is about 45 mins. from here. I wasn't there for it though.
-52 Deg F, recorded on Feb. 18, 1979 at Old Forge (elev. 1,720 ft.) & also on earlier dates there.

I lived in Gouverneur NY for a few years and I saw -42 for a few days. Work was limited to only filling the wood boiler and feeding the the cows, pigs, and chickens. It never got above zero for a week and it actually hurt to breath.

I think -20 is about as cold as I can remember. Not sure what the record is but I doubt it is much below that. Below 0 is too cold for me.

I sat in our outdoor hot tub one night around midnite when the air temp hit -25F with wind chills around -40F… just to say I did it. It was only 3 steps to the patio door…thank God!

It was so cold that the heating element wouldn't keep the water over 98F or so… it was set @ 104F.

Have skiied in -10 temps. Brutal on exposed face and brutal on appendages if/when ya crash because packed groomed is for all intents just pond ice and just as hard. Worst was being on an open chair lift. No body movement to help stay warm.
Went out at 1 AM that night to see the stars and just to be out in the record cold but don't remember what the temp was.
    Eerily quiet.
Had to travel to NH for those temps, coldest here is probably a degree or two below zero tops.
    Tempered by Buzzards Bay.
