My neighbor had black walnut rounds stacked up for years, probably at least five because I don't remember the tree being taken down so it had to be before I moved in. I helped him split it a year ago and it was still solid. He even had them stacked on bare ground under trees in the shade. There may have been a few punky spots but he got a lot of firewood out of it. I was kinda bummed splitting it all up into firewood as some of it had great color and figure, there was some amazing maroon/purple streaks in some of it.

It holds up fairly well. I've picked up a bunch of rounds that I know for sure had been sitting on the roadside for 5 years. Sap wood was punky or gone and the heart wood was still solid. It's not the hottest wood you could burn but fee makes it more gooder.

Walnut is not the greatest, but far from the worst. It's a good addition to any hoard.

It leaves a lot of ash and doesn't burn the hottest. But this time of year that's okay with me, black locusts would run us out of the house.

I'll take whatever I can, if it's not good for the stove I'll then put it for the fire pit

Heh Eric VW my Dear wood snob friend:rofl: .... I burn any and all deciduous trees but I burnt 14 plus cords last year:bug:. I never put pine in a woodstove. Always told that was a no no. But members here told me I could so I got a cord or 2 of that split out back too. I figure in 5 years I have burned over 60 cord (mostly wrong):emb: I got no truck ( Saab hatch back) and 5 by 10 trailer. if you are trying to put up 20 cord a year to get ahead I cant be picky.... I will sort then :saw: :tree::axe: :stacke::coldfire: anything.... US northern folk can't be wood snobs (like some unnamed people:whistle:)until we reach 50 cord outback. Then we need another 10 cords for elderly neighbors and friends just in case. But that's OK Eric we still like you (even if your a snob) if only because the dog in your avatar is so darn cute:thumbs:

Oh yeah walnut got about same BTUs at white birch and Boggy Dave heats his house with that and he's in Alaska!

For others who may be new... Eric is a fun loving great guy.. Who likes to joke and tease.. He will not be offended by this little rant...

Black walnut is 20 mbtu a cord. So, like ash btu wise. It's a good mid grade wood.

Unless you are overflowing with wood I say grab it. It will burn fine and keep your house warm.

Ditto all said, including the spirited love-fest going on above, it burns fine, much like maple heat wise,, however it does produce a great deal of ash...I say go for it  Wow CB VT-14 cords last year and no truck and small trailer? Props man, big props :dex: Ain't no Hokie ever done that, jus sayin
