Some of the best stacks I have seen PD! No wonder the occasional stranger wants to see them up close, I know I would......
Made a little more progress today. Set some more posts, and started stacking some more Maple. There's a slight bit more in the field, but I'm plum tuckered out. Once I get that Maple, I'll start setting posts back near the trailer, and get the Oak started back there. Need to pull 1/3 cord of that from the field.
Dave, I heard that Kalkaska got 5" of snow the other day. Surely had to make a mess at this time of year. During the winter, you hardly notice 5" falling there!
All joking around aside (yeah, right), I've been contemplating the situation I now find myself in re: firewood storage. I had TONS of room in the field, it got plenty of sun and wind, and aside from having to haul wood back and forth, it was a great spot to get our firewood dry. Now, I don't feel comfortable stacking wood back there, at least for a while. The driveway should work out well, but it limits the amount I can store. I've got a couple other spots, but unless I take down some trees, they aren't great drying areas. I'll figure it out, but it's stressing out my brainwaves. I'm gonna' short something out up there. I'll have some more pics later, if the rain will hold off for a few hours. About 2/3 cord or so left to move and stack, then it's back to ss the rest of the Maple I have and going for more. Plan to order up some more Ash next month too, if I can figure out where to put it.
Maybe keep an eye out for some cheap or free chain link fence. Maybe fenced off with a locked gate might deter the thieves. Most people are lazy, and the extra work to try and get the wood may keep them away.
I've thought of doing that up here in the driveway entrance. Make it tough, and they'll go away. Too much work. Only problem is plowing snow becomes a major pain up that part of the drive even without obstructions, since the tractor and plow are behind the pole barn........about 60' from the front of the pole barn. Keep those suggestions coming, boys and girls. I'm still cogitatin' any and all options.
Okay, here is another suggestion. Forget all you've heard about stacking wood where it is not in full or partial sun. We've stacked wood many times where there was little or no sun at all. Never had a problem getting the wood dried either. However, if you plan on using it within a year, then it might be suspect unless it got lots of wind. I still say that wind will dry things faster than sun. The sun will dry where it hits but much of the pile does not get that sunshine! But when the wind blows, unless you have one side blocked off, the wood will dry even in the shade. I may even stack some wood next year where it gets little or no sunlight except for when the leaves drop; that is, I'll stack it right in the deep woods. It won't be the first time we've done that so we will not be worried.
Yeah, I know Dennis. You've taught us well on that point, and it's the truth. The field was optimal......sun AND wind.....best of both worlds. That's what bugs me. I had about a cord stacked behind one of the sheds back in early '08 before I started stacking in the field. That stuff got no sun and only slight wind. Didn't do well. Where I'm moving this stuff to is almost like a nice wind tunnel, so it should do well. Also gets some afternoon sun, even in the winter. I could also set some up behind the house in full southern exposure and wind. Not easily seen from the road.
Wrap the stacks with chicken wire secured with zip ties. From far away it would look like just plain ole firewood stacks, but when they get right up on it the will be like WTF, and hopefully just turn around. I can come up with a zillion unconventional ideas...
