    My Update;

    I thinking about retiring in December 2015. I don't want to commute 270 miles twice a week anymore. I have mandatory retirement at 57 and I'm 51 right now. I'll be ok with my 3 retirement incomes but I'll need to stay busy and this would pay the shop bills.

    So on with my story;
    Sam's Club has built a new store a few blocks from my house and I applied for a few positions today and they called me for an interview. I have some back issues from my time as a federal agent and this will test the water on what my hiring potential will be.

    This might be more then I'm willing to put forth job wise.

    Wow, that's gotta' be strange.

    I'm busier in retirement than I was while "working".
    Seems like it, anyway.

    I say go for it maybe just part time on your terms a little extra $$ and it's something different to do .

    Congrats on having retirement available and possibly so soon. I've heard of retirees anything from "busier than when I worked" to "bored and lonely" & anywhere between. 51 years old seems kinda young to me for retirement, but I can sure see how anyone would want to stop a nasty commute like that.

    Good luck on your decision and good for you on three retirements. That is great! Whatever you do, keep moving after you retire. Even if it is just walking and being on your feet.

    I retired @ the end of January this year. Was the wrong time to do that up here. So, I had done some fore-planning and had hooked up with a local bus contractor to do charters. Thing is that this contractor is primarily a school bus provider which I want no part of. Charters are far and few between. In May, I decided to drop off a resume to a local Community based transportation service. They provide transportation to folks of various situations who cannot drive themselves for their medical appointments.
    Turns out it has been the perfect fit. I usually work 2-3 days a week which I get to choose. It has turned out to be the perfect situation for me. My point being, definitely try to find something you are happy with. Biggest problem is the ability to control your work schedule. Good luck......................

    I'm sure with Sam's Club if they find out you like and can work anytime that's probably what's happens. Just testing the water on Sam's, a friend owns a body shop and told me to stop by, so I will. I definitely need to stay in motion for my back.

    I predict improvement in the back injury when the 270 mile thing ends. Voice of experience here.

    As I have reached this point in life, I tell the interviewer what I am willing to give to them.

    This past summer, I said I will work days only. No evenings; no weekends; no Holidays.

    It worked like a charm!
    I used it pretty much the same this past week and we'll see just how this one turns out.

    At this stage of your life, you can pick what you want and I'm sure the lengthy commute is not remotely anywhere in there!

    That was a very quick interview, $9 starting wasn't an option for me. [IMG]

    My wife went on an interview a few years ago at Wally's (she's WAYYYY overqualified), and they wouldn't offer any more than minimum wage.
    Once that question was answered, she told the woman the interview was over, as she didn't want to waste any more time for either of them.
    By the time you take out taxes, fuel, and whatever, it just wasn't worth it.
    The possibilty of having to make 4-5 75 mile roundtrips/weekly to get 20 hours didn't seem like a good idea.:headbang:

    Ya, you can find something better to do than work for $9 an hour with all the experience you have.

    Interesting, I will keep reading really enjoy a little older and wiser perspectives.. My state is trying to make minimum wage 15 an hour.. This is the home of Bernie Sanders (I deliberately say nothing more). Most think they won't do it.. I think they will.. Here's why. many towns already have livable wage laws including Burlington so if you do whatever job for city you start at 23 an hour!:bug: Explains why taxes are high there.

    Nontheless, if state gets minimum wage up to 15 an hour would greatly reduce number of people on state health insurance by up to 70%. Only way i can see budgetary issues resolved.

    This is intended to be mathematical not political..

    So if minimum is 15 I figure qualified educated has got to be 20 ish. If this happens I will have to dust off my resume! oh I am self employed and have been since 2001 when a really nice bank bought the bank I worked for and since I was told my position would not be retained in new company...:D I gave my mandatory 3 week notice on spot. then they told me I had to stay :rofl: :lol: and then we negotiated a contract where I decided it was in my best interest. Self employed is good for freedom and flexibility but maybe part time business on side part time work is good decision....

    Soo, keep posting your opinions.

    Oh I was walking out but they started the contract negotiations you saying x number of weeks severance for every additional week you work. so a year later when it was final. I got over 3+ years severance pay. so almost work 1 week now get 3.5 weeks of pay when you leave as a bonus if and only if you stay til the bitter end..

    The only positions that were available were broom pushers, I guess I was a little late for the main hiring push.

    Sam's Club, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes and all of the rest of those Big Box wonders are all hit with the same stick. Treat their employees like Chit, give them minimum hours based on sales revenue and usally the crappiest schedule they can come up with. Trust me Unicorn, you can find something ALOT better, it just may take a little longer.........................:thumbs:
