Got a call from my buddy asking if I wanted a load of free wood

    Uh yeah, I want some cheesy poofs!

    It's basswood, but free, delivered, and dry. It's also small enough to not have to split. It's a face cord+/-.

    I've been burning it today, and it burns great. Free, delivered, dry shoulder wood.

    This is unfortunately from the tree he thought was a huge black locust, so that is a bummer.

    Difficult to tell from pictures but that might be soft maple rather than bass. If so, super!

    It's definitely basswood. It was a 6.5' f150 bed worth, neatly stacked up to the top of the bed.

    The wife is happy with it. I've got no complaints.


    That's my cutting buddy. I've been very good friends with him for nearly my entire life. We've been friends for 32 of our 40 years of existence.

    The funny thing is that it helped him out, the wood was on his gf's lot, and it had to go. My house is closer to hers, than his house, so it was a win win.

    Theres more of this basswood to get, but I can have all the free cut and split box elder I want. There's at least a cord of that that we css'd last winter. If it goes the way I think it will, I'll be 3-4 years ahead this winter.

    If is is basswood that is some great wood for carving. Later I will try to find some pics on the net of some miniatures I have carved from basswood.

    There's a fair amount of it around here. There's a couple in my woods that I need to fell this winter to allow the better hardwoods more growing room and light.

    Ok found this on the net, I carved this out of basswood, stained it golden oak, and upholstered it with a nice silk brocade. The chair is about 3" tall. If ya wanna see a pic of the matching bed I saw that pic out there too. Screenshot_2015-10-19-21-11-18.png

    Ok so here are some more pics, the bed and chair were like the very first ones I made. I have made quite a few of these since these were made, and my carving has improved. I actally have two of these beds sitting on my table right now, one stained walnut. I also make a neat matching vanity with working drawers and a lily pad top three legged side table.     Basswood is best used for shoulder wood, and carving. :yes:

    Get your buddy to drop off some maple and I can jack your thread with some pics of the tiniest birdseye veneer I could find made into an Art Deco style desk. :smoke:
