Look what Santa Saws left on my front deck late this morning - another future restoration project, barn find from Platteville,WI. McCulloch 740,6.04 cubic inch/99cc torque monster made from May 1963 to June 1964.Will pull up to a 42" bar/chain.Right-hand starter - most large saws of this vintage with RH were gear-drive,instead of direct- drive like this one. They also had the 840,with same engine as this, but gear-drive.Sold from July 1963 to June 1964.

Excellent compression (I'm barely 170lbs but had to practically kneel on the air filter cover to hold this down while pulling that rope),little to no spark, cover has a chunk missing from corner & top of fuel tank had a couple pinholes repaired sometime back with epoxy - but it don't leak & that will be eventually sanded & repainted.Just some minor fixes & should be a strong runner when finished. It was cheap enough the way it was so no complaints.

Also grabbed this for $9 from different Seller - This is an original 16 page booklet with complete parts schematic & factory numbers. Not a reprint, which are usually a buck or two less when available.I'm no purist,if its complete & legible,I want it.You cant restore or work on these vintage beasts without knowing what parts to look for + their stock numbers.

How far back in years do they still stock parts for their saws?

Used to run that motor on my go carts when I was racing as a young lad. 4 carbs pushing alcohol and castor oil made them absolutely "SCREAM". Ah, the good old days.

Since McCulloch Motors Inc. went belly-up in 1999 or so,you have to check online at Ebay & other places for New Old Stock & used parts since no dealers are still around.

Some parts are plentiful & cheap/somewhat reasonable, others are scarce & expensive.Depending on the model of saw,if it was popular & sold for several years. It takes patience & some luck hunting them down, but that's part of the fun.No different than searching for parts for old cars, tractors, motorcycles etc.

    Thistle,

I looked way too fast at those pics and thought you had a Super 797 show up. Still a great find!

I wish it was...but don't really play favorites.Since I cant afford to pay $250 & up for EVERY large old Mac I see in ready to use & good cosmetic condition, this is a good way to build the collection.Even it takes months or a couple years to find the parts/do the restore for each one...I'm in no rush.Still lots of them out there hidden away in barns/sheds all over the US,but less each year.Lots were sold as scrap metal or recycled too & unfortunately some still are by certain unknowing fools...

Cool Thistle. Will be interesting to see what happens to that saw. Got a pic of your saws that are restored?

    Hey Mike,

If you get to talking about that lot, I'd be interested in this one. Old Remington, probably a Super 75?

Holy.Crap. In that first pic, bottom center that looks like either a Super 250(87cc early-mid 60's beast) or something similar.I think that had the black air filter cover where as the 200,regular 250 & 300 (all 80cc of same vintage) was yellow.

I had a 640 bow saw but sent it Ohio to a fellow who used to hang out on Another Site. Here are a couple of pictures of it as found, sorry it wasn't shined up.
