A friend called and said he had a truckload or two of wood I could cut if I wanted it. So I headed over around noon and it turned out to be a bit more than I expected. Luckily my father in law came to help out but it still took us until about 6 to get it done. Before I started cutting First two truckloads Last two truckloads. The 555 is still an awesome saw and I love running it!!
The bases of those trees are probably 30" in diameter and they wanted to know if I would be willing to drop them. They were topped by the line trimming crews so they are probably only about 25-30 foot tall. Should be an easy drop and a good excuse to run the 28" bar on MMWS 460!
Question for those familiar with maple, if I get it cut, split, and stacked now will it be ready for next year's shoulder season? I don't have to use it but I am running low on low btu wood for shoulder season fires.
Not familiar with Silver, but Sugar might not be ready. I use quite a bit of Red Maple, and it dries pretty well in a year in the right conditions. Oh, and Sugar is on par with Oak, or close in most btu charts.
I have Silver that was cut down green early this spring and the smaller splits are under 20% already, not to sure about Sugar. This silver dry gets lighter in weight than pine to me.
The silver I would say yes. I do not consider sugar shoulder wood. I like as much as oak and dries twice as fast. split small it might be ready in 14 months it will be close!
Nice Certified106 ... 4 loads! Sweet! And now the base too, Oh Yea! You will have some good wood for sure. You will definitely have to try to get pics and/or video of that MMWS460 taking care of business...
That's a lot of wood you got right there! Just imagine how much is left in those trunks still!? Looks like you bucked a bunch on the longer side? Does your FIL have an outdoor woodburner maybe?
My FIL doesn't even burn wood but still came along. Without the second truck I don't think I would have gotten it all back to the house so that worked out well. I have most of it cut between 18"-20" as my stove will handle 20 OK.
Yeah I really like it a lot but after 5-6 hours with it on the small stuff I sometimes wish it was a touch lighter like maybe a 550XP That 555 pulls hard that's for sure. Even with a sharp chain and the rakers taken down I can't even give it full throttle in wood under 16" lol
I think if you split that silver maple small. it should be decent to burn by late winter. Just a matter of how efficiently it burns. Nice haul.
I agree - sugar maple is very good wood. It may be ready in a year under the right conditions (split small, top-covered, off the ground) but it gives off a lot of heat. I haven't cut much silver maple but what I have has been used in shoulder season after about 10 months c/s/s and it warmed the house very well.
