How's a good way to clean the "S" shape generator on the Akron? If I put a splash of kerosene in a fount and slosh around then dump out being a oilier substance would it fend off rust in a gas lantern better than gas? The Akron has no date stamp. Is there any way to date these?

looks like you have yourself a 1951 coleman "christmas" model 200a, should have a date stamped into the bottom of the fount, i'm quite sure all chrismas lanterns were from 1951, great score!!, here's a pic of mine...... IMAG0197.JPG

i'm not aware of any easy way to clean the "S" generators, but you will need to clean the tip once in a while, i think others have been using "sea foam" to help prevent rust, as far as dating the akron, i'm not too sure myself, but it might be time for you to join the "coleman collectors forum", many knowledgeable members there that would know far more on the akron lanterns than myself, it's not really a "coleman only" forum, they cover just about any GPA and wick lanterns as well.........

Thanks old 040, I'll look for a date later this weekend. What did you thing of the box? Made by a handyman? Probably my step granddad if that is the case.

it was very common in the 50's for folks to make alot of things, though coleman also made lantern cases that almost looked homemade, so it's kinda hard to tell on yours......

Congrats on your score, is the gold bond rare? I've never even seen a picture of one. Thanks for the update on the box.

Has anyone accidentally or purposefully run kerosene in a gas or gas in a kerosene? What will happen? I am unsure after reading a post on another site if I have a gas or kerosene lantern. They mentioned in a post questioningly of someone said if a generator is square topped it is kerosene if oval it is gas. Has anyone heard such a thing about Akron lantern company generators? If it is so mine is a kerosene but with no preheat cup just a S generator, how would that work? I'm new to this but I thought if it was kerosene a preheat was necessary???

I've read that the early 103's could burn either, yours should be a match light gas type generator, that's what I'd try in it first, but before you light it, pump up the fount and crack open the valve and watch for raw fuel, if it comes out excessive don't try to light it, and try to locate the problem if it does.........

Newbie question...what would make excessive gas come out and are we talking lots of fumes or some dripping or a stream of fluid.

yes, raw fuel, if it has a kero tip it could this, kero's have a larger orifice in the tip, also check for leaks at the valve shaft packing......

Mama Bear is gone tonight so I can foolishly waste my time! I fiddled around and might have a display model. Didn't put a lot of time or effort into it but I can't get my Akron to push fuel. It builds pressure but when the valve is opened nothing comes out the generator. Might be a winter project and if nuttin else it will look nice on a display somewhere.

Worked on my 220J and my compulsion has been ignited to collect more lanterns! Fired up my first gas light ever.:dex: I have seen the light and have become an addict. Not sure what the difference is but this seems more old ways hence feels gooder makin light like this rather than propain.

might want to try removing the generator then open the valve to see if the fuel is even reaching the generator.........
