Running my new to me 044 and it runs like a champ. Pulls 28" skip easy. Today i had to noodle some bigger rounds. Cleaned up all the limbs but the trunk has some bulk. Anyway the 044 clutch cover doesnt seem big enough. Anyone know of a larger one to help clear these noods
The large clutch cover isn't wider than the one you have. It's extended to protect the operators hands when using a wrap handle. If you have an old cover you don't mind cutting up you can cut the tail off or if you want max clearance you can cob together something like this.
Saws clog when noodling. Especially when near the ground. It's a real pain but way better than trying to lift those huge rounds into the truck.
Great advice on cutting the cover down. Going without works, but one needs to be extra cautious of hand and finger placement. Many older saws had no cover, so it's not the wrong thing to do, just be careful.
Appreciate the advice! found some covers on ebay 12$-20$ not bad. I need to order a new muffler as well. Dual port muff/custom trimmed clutch cover n we will be launching some spaghetti
Until you get another cover... When you are noodling, and vary the pitch of your saw through the round it will help. Maple seems to clog a little easier, but if you start jamming up give yourself 15 degrees or so instead of being completely parallel to the grain. Your cutting speed wont change much, and you'll see the the length of the noodles that are hanging up get shorter and shorter and discharge better. Just my .02
Also try to keep the power head away from the log as it gives the noodles a chance to drop out before they even get sucked into the cover.
I can't see what you're using, but the stock chain catcher collects noodles. If you switch to the roller style which mounts further forward helps a little too.
There are saws that are almost impossible to jam with noodles. (Except when you let the pile reach the saw.) Some examples I've run: Husqy 576 & 455r, Dolmar 6100, PP5020, RedMax GZ4000. Some are really bad, but why embarrass them? Seems to me, it's all in the design of the clutch cover. Designed right, no chop-job required. Maybe this problem is a suggestion to only noodle partway, like to part forks & knots? To prep for maul.
Even a 90 cc saw will jam if you lean on it. You must be running it like a granny to not clog up a 455 or 5020.
It's not a matter of power. I have run CT's Dolmar 6100 in a log sideways and can say the thing doesn't clog the cover with noodles. It's remarkably better than my ported 441 in that respect.
Yea my 84cc stihl cologs easy with noodles. I am running on of these full time. There a perfectly serviceadle replacement and will work fine chopped down to help clear the noodles.
this is what i did i gutted out the rubber chip deflector and got rid of the regular chain catcher and put on a roll catcher works great for noodling
Great. As if it wasn't bad enough that everyone demands we post pics of our saws in drop-dead sexy poses. Now they have to wear skirts too?! Thanks a lot Chris.
