I'm pretty sure the little bit of oak I have to start the year is 4 years old. Finish the year with a mixed bag of 3 year stuff.
Ive got all oak, half of it 3 yrs the other half around 2.5. The maple, hickory, and poplar for ss is just over 14 mos. Most of the oak is from Hurricane Sandy.
Most of the Oak is at least 2 years old, but there's a bunch that got css after that and it was dead or down and barkless. The Pine is from last year, and so is the Maple. They all seem to be burning well..........except I haven't burned any of the oak. Actually haven't burned a whole lot of anything yet. Warmer than last year at this time.
Ah, my Achille's Heel... No 4 year oak to brag on here... How about a gratuitous stack pics thread? I bought my place in Nov 2013, and the oldest stuff I have is some locust that was css summer '14. But 100% of the wood in my stacks was dead standing, leaning or laying. A lot of it is quick drying stuff that I split small; I'll have to let the MM sort out which stacks to burn. I'm pretty sure it's going to be some (dead standing) ash the was cut to rounds last fall and split April-May, and the locust from last summer.
All of mine is 1-2 summers. The harder stuff is 2 summers, some of the aspen and pine is only 1. Greg
I'm still working to get some more Ash too. Since it dries so quick, I can be back on the 3 year plan in no time.
let's see some 2 year old apple and hard maple.. 3 year old ash.. 1 year old popular and birch but alas no oak or hickory yet trying to get some black locust from a friend that needs them cut this fall 10 or so cord standing 40 minutes away. just to get on the 3 year plan...
4 year old oak, mixed bag of a cord of all rounds that I stacked either 4 or 5 years ago and then I'll also be dipping into my big pile in an area that has been stacked for 4 or 5 years (locust, ash, elm, cherry and beech)
Most of this year's wood is 2 yrs old. Most of it is ash, but there's a little osage in there somewhere that's 3 ears old.
The wood I will be burning this winter is all dead standing american elm and black cherry. Half css in April; currently working on the other half; hope to have about 3 cord total. All has measured between 15% and 20%. Trying to keep my paws off the 3 year old oak for another year ... might be a challenge when it gets really cold.
Half 3 year old red oak and the rest is a mixed bag of 2 - 3 year old maple, sasafrass, sycamore, cherry, tulip, Aspen and elm. I'm looking forward to experimenting a little with the variety. But then again, I have a bit of a firewood problem..
