    Visited the Goose Island Oak, "Big Tree." 1969 Texas state champion costal live oak Quercus virginiana.

    Here's the specs:
    • Trunk circumference: 35 feet 1.75 inches or 10.71 meters
    • Average trunk diameter: 11 feet 2.25 inches or 3.41 meters
    • Crown spread: 89 feet or 27.1 meters
    • Height: 44 feet or 13.4 meters
    • Age: In excess of 1,000 years.

    They have trimmed a lot of the lower branches, which reduces the trees resistance to high winds. They should leave the old tree untrimmed, in my opinion.

    Seems like more limbs equals more leafs equals more surface area to catch high winds,,,,,no?

    The mrs and i visited new orleans last year and I was amazed at the size if the live oaks there. They were massive! o_O

    most of these large trees need cabling or some type of support to hold up their large branches. Otherwise the weight or the wind will bring them down.

    I want to visit the plantations...Oak Alley in particular. Those trees are really old. I heard 500 years

    Cool post. Big venerable living things that outlast generations of people - I find it rather humbling. Imagine how much air it breathed and water it drank in its lifetime.
