I was encouraged by a member to show pictures of my wood stacks so here they are. Its not a huge amount considering some Ive seen here but its still money in the bank! All splits are 18 inches and the long row is a double row on pallets. Comprised of larch, fir, lodgepole pine, paper birch and a bit of spruce. Pictures were taken today on my .12 of an acre lot. The picture of the moisture meter is from a fresh split larch round taken out of my stacks, I wish it was reading a higher mc but it may gain a bit with the October rains.
Hi Eric, I prefer it to be a bit higher than 5%. The larch is the best we get out here for overnight burn wood and when I stuff the stove to the gills at 11 pm I get a bit ancy when the wood is that dry. 20% is getting marginal for me but 12%-17% is perfect.
,"It's not a huge amount" my foot, Sean. Neat stacks and alot of wood there... Good job! I'd call yours a prodigeous hoard, specially considering it's on a .12 acre lot.
If the weather closes in I will drop the tarps over the edges and maybe nail them to the pallets through the grommets until it passes. During the summer I dont fuss with it as the odd moist end drys away. Once freeze up happens I usually bring them up again so that I don't have a tarped in moisture tent. Once winter comes we dont get much rain and the air is so dry I will be good. I guess what I meant is a bit of water gets through the tarps and will bring up the mc. I wish I could have a wood shed but its not in the cards. The snow blower keeps the snow away from the front of the stacks.
With some pallets, a little recycled tin roofin' and a hand full off screws, you could have a shed.... that's what mine is made of... And it works well. But too, I know how the "cards" play out.
Not a bad idea.... If I search here will I see some pics of how you built it? Ive been looking at attaching a roof of sorts to my single row stacks as well. With plenty of overhang. We'll see. If I didnt have the dog kennel for Tundra I would have a bit more space.
Welcome aboard Sean, nice hoard you have there. Until I saw your signature lines I thought that second picture was for you in case you got in trouble. I always try to keep one foot in the dog house so I don't have far to go. Of course you didn't mention whether you were married or not. Looks like you'll fit right in around here amongst us firewood brethern.
Sean- If you have a area 4 foot wide or what size you want to make below is a picture of 1 of several I have most are 16long 4 wide and 5-5 1/2 foot tall. I built mine right along a chain link fence as you got. This one is 20 foot long[ 2 10 footers screwed and bolted to gather ]
That looks pretty functional Tigeroak. I get lots of snow here but a mid brace like what you have looks like it would take care of that. Thanks for sharing.
did you stack the wood by the gas meter on purpose, like maybe to give the guy reading the meter a hint
Thanks HDRock. The family was asking if we were done for the season today. I have a hard time answering that as its a great way for me to relax. I know some get flack for harvesting in the fall so I should clarify. Most of my stacks were put up as soon as the snow left and have been c,s,s since late June. I harvest mostly dead standing so even off the stump its rarely more than 24% mc. The birch was harvested green in November and then a second batch in March. In BC its illegal to drop live trees on crown land so the birch was picked up by me from some power line crews that came through. Some of my single row fir was c,s,s as early as possible this spring and is now getting close.
Thats funny. Im actually a bit sensitive to things falling over there so Im careful to not over do it since they come into my yard every two months to read it. The stack hasnt by the way, I just see it as a hazard to be careful around.
Thank you Locust Post. Married 21 years to a wonderful red head. She puts up with me and is always willing to help with the processing and tending to the stove. Even gets involved in my silly btu conversations!
The way I see it , cut when ya want ,when you have time . There is always ,more one way to do something
Thanks Gark, its a lot of hard work but well worth it as you know! Ive seen scotty overkills wood stacks and man thats impressive!
