On the news, people were moving out to family members with heat. The cold spell with a several day power outage, is causing serious housing issues. Soon , frozen pipes burst, ice in the house. even more problems to come.
I know, I was getting my gen ready to take to my daughters house and she called and said nevermind she was going to rent a cabin, She says she has done what she needs to at the house but I'm not so sure, Going down to 8 tonight 3 tomorrow. These kind of temperatures and no power for a week I just don't know They don't have a lot of wood but they have a Lopi answer, And I told them I would give them some wood
You made the offer. Hope the water pipes were drained , outside faucets 1st to freeze . Cabin? Go figure Need to burn wood for heat ? Probably will have a fun Christmas
They are a members of this little resort deal, 20 miles away.Cabins sleep 6 modern appliances, gas heat, $120 for 3 days http://www.outdooradventuresinc.com/resort_lake_shore.html
Yes I am doing some worrying, And When everything screwed up you know who they call, But I don't have to foot the bill.
Last winter i was caught away from home during the February blizzard in New England that brought 2-2.5 feet of snow due to flight cancellations. My wife and kids (5 yrs, 3 yrs and 4 mos) were in the beach house that was our temporary residence while house shopping. They lost power at 9pm on Friday night. She hooked up our 750w diehard inverter to the Duramax and plugged in the propane wall unit which kept the poorly insulated cottage at 65 degrees. She started the truck every 4-5 hours and let it run for 20-30 minutes. I failed to tell her about the fast idle setting so on Sunday morning after having been without power for 30 hours, the truck batteries died at 2am. Truck wouldn't start. Fortunately, she had our other vehicle pulled in nose to nose with the duramax and was able to jump the duramax and put it back in operation letting it run for about an hour and a half. Needless to say, when I finally got home 40 hours after she lost power, the house was still 65, food preserved outside in the snow and kids were comfortable. One set of neighbors had abandoned their house and the others were sitting inside a 49 degree house that they had pre-heated to 90 prior to losing power. Their food was spoiled and the generator in the shed was untouched. They didn't know how to use it. Needless to say, a back-up power source to keep your heat going can be under $100. This is the one she used. http://www.sears.com/diehard-750-watt-mobile-power-inverter-with-digital/p-02871495000P
They use more power than you think Dave.. Keep this in mind that for every amp at 120 volts you'll draw 10+ amps at 12 volts.. Pellet stoves have a combustion blower, exhaust blower and an auger motor.. http://blog.magnumheat.com/2011/03/01/how-much-electricity-does-it-take-to-run-my-pellet-stove/ just to give you a general idea.. It would take a decent size battery bank to keep a pellet stove running for any length of time.. Another issue with pellet stove is smoke entering the home upon power loss because you lose the exhaust blower unless you have a very good draft because the burn pot continues to smolder.. Many pellet stoves have a short flue pipe with an inline blower that would impede exhaust flow further if not running.. Wiseway is the only pellet stove that I am aware of that uses no electricity to operate.. Very interesting stove but rather funky to look at unless you have a modern style home.. Ray
Pete bought a small 2 cycle genny for around 100 bucks that would power your pellet stove easily with some to spare.. I think pallet pete bought it at Harbor Freight and hope he tells you about it.. Ray
Yup HF its a good little Genny and cheap right now. I have been running it on and off as the power goes out and comes on again it sips gas and runs very well with synthetic 2cycle oil. http://www.harborfreight.com/engine...ning-watts-2-hp-63cc-gas-generator-60338.html
I ate at Taco Bells years ago. Then I had to do some work at one of them. I will never forget the smell of rotting taco meat nor will I ever eat there again. Hope all you guys in this storm are ok. Keep your heads up. This will make for a Christmas you will always remember! We lost power for most of the day yesterday. A tree went through the wires above us. Tree looks like a white oak?? Had no bark, and was the color of the background of our id bars, just a little lighter. I am going to check it closer later this week. We were at 64 degrees yesterday, now at 30. Won't miss the mud!
I bought this in 2000 , it has run maybe 2 hours total since I bought it , haven't started it in 10 years, put gas in it yesterday, started 3rd pull
Very nice! I run mine once a month under load for around 20 mins or so.. I run the 1/2HP well pump and the furnace while taking a shower.. Great little generator so far and only cost me $299.00.
So, after two nights of no power, the power is now back up. We ran a k-1 heater last night and got the house up to the mid 50s while the outside temp was 8 F and dropping. Our Christmas celebration was moved to my daughters home. So, maybe tonight I'll be in a warm bed, Merry Christmas!
looks like some candy glaze. 3-6 in. fresh snow predicted tomorrow. should be a lot more power outages.
