Mdavlee can speak on this better than me. The ones if your really interested and the years you want and dont.

I do know taking off all the regen filters and egr stuff you will get 2-4mpg better and make more power and have a more reliable truck.

My buddy works in parts at a dodge dealer in Charleston SC. He sent me a pic of the diesel cats that were warrentied just that week under repairs. It was a pile of like 6 and that was just that week and I think it was only mid week!!! That stuff is the cause of most diesel problems now a days.

Pre 2007.5 is what you want for no emissions. Come down south and get a rust free unti and save about $25k off the $45k budget. Most Gm and Dodges of that era will get 16-20 empty as stock trucks.

You gotta wonder if the manufacturers figured their warranty costs would skyrocket due to the emissions equipment that they have been forced to provide, and adjusted the window stickers accordingly.....

Wasn't that long ago that $45k would have bought a diesel 300+HP 1 ton dually with every option and had enough leftover to take the family out to dinner.

Could be. 10 years ago I bought a brand new crew cab dodge 2500 Cummins, 6 speed, few more options for 33k. Sticker was under $37k on it. 2011 the 3500 SRW with about the same options and the auto 6 speed was $49k sticker.

I'm 33 and have never bought a new vehicle. I think I am a minority I guess? Never had the desire or cash too really.

I put a ton of miles on them and they're a write off somewhat. For several years I averaged 40k a year. When warranty is up it was time to go.

I drove 36k one year commuting. Down to 12k a year on my own for commute and 15k on the work one. And whatever I drive for trips and weekend

I wouldn't let people scare you about the 6.0 Powerstroke. Once you do an EGR delete they're pretty reliable. Most of the horror stories went away once people figured that out.

The costs to make them reliable really aren't all that bad, if you do the work BEFORE things go to hell. But unless you already know that engine, I would take it to
someone who does before I bought one.
