I have been finding some deals on tools recently and thought a thread to post up acquisitions would be appropriate. Let's see what sort of deals you have gotten. I found this set of Wiha Torx drivers for $4.00 in a pawn shop today.
There's an online auction site by me where you can sometimes find pretty good deals. A lot of this stuff is store returns from Amazon and Home Depot, so you never know if anythings wrong but I've been lucky so far. I've bought a lot of sporting equipment and home building supplies there, but some of my tool purchases have turned out pretty good as well. I picked up this 12" Bosch miter saw for $150. Only thing wrong was the arbor bolt showed signs that whoever bought it thought it was a right hand thread. They probably returned it because they couldn't get the bolt out lol! I got this 12" WEN drill press for $60 in perfect condition other than the key for the switch was missing (as you can see I found that a nail works fine). Picked up this tool box for $30. It's not as nice as my primary Craftsman boxes are, but it does the job fine for tools I don't need as often. It just had a small dent on the front right corner that doesn't change the function. Also picked up this 6' step ladder for $15. In perfect condition. And finally got this mini fridge for the REALLY important things in my shop for $40. It had a small dent in the back, and it fits the decor nicely!
Picked up this Hitachi wheelbarrow style gas air compressor today. It has a Honda 5.5 HP engine on it, $100 out the door at a pawn shop. They said it was leaking gas, but it fired on the first pull and I saw no evidence of any leak.
You scored on that compressor, same engine I have on my splitter, starts right up within 3 pulls when cold, 1 pull when warmed up. the reason it takes up to 3 pulls when cold is because i turn off the gas and run the carb dry after each use
Great finds Gary!! I just bought a compressor off of a buddy for my basement. A cheap Central Pneumatic, but it was $20 and the he gave me a 3/8" impact, some hose, and some fittings.
I have a CP framing gun my dad bought in 2000.... He built a dozen homes/additions with it, it's built several homes out here since 2005 and a certain woodshed, still banging! HF may sell cheap, but hey their tools may last longer than most think! Good for you, Dex!
I have numerous HF tools. They are cheap, but not junk.. Some don't last as long as others, but for the average homeowner (me )? They are a perfect fit. You've been to my house. I know you didn't see any Snap on boxes or Mac tools
Ive snagged a few screaming deals over the years at auctions. Got a lightly used 1/2" Dewalt angle drill for $80 and a 15" Dewalt chop saw for $35. Ladders, scaffolding, shop carts, and other support equipment at scrap prices. Watch Craftsman sales for small hand tools and for bigger tools I watch the online sales at Northern, Toolrage, amazon, tooltopia,Enco , Airgas, and a few others. Every estate auction I've been to around here, the small hand tools and tool chests get bid up higher than new prices. I've seen shovels at auctions sell for $20 when HD has them for $12 every day.CRAZY!
As a contractor, the problem I have with pawn shops is, a lot of it is not acquired legally. Why support them, you are creating a market for tools which were taken from someone trying to make a living.
I have a friend who runs a pawn shop, they routinely turn away people who don't appear to have knowledge of an item or a connection to it. The police regularly visit their shop and will remove items that have been reported stolen. They are required to hold items for a period of time before they can be sold for this process to work. If an item is removed by police the shop loses their money, so they take steps to avoid that. At the shop where I bought the Wiha tools earlier in the week, all customers selling or pawning items are required to present their driver's license, have their picture taken and give a fingerprint before receiving any cash. Stolen items can be disposed of by many means other than pawn shops, as always the buyer should use caution and common sense.
