My middle son was lucky enough to get a bull permit for the September moose hunt. He, my youngest and I headed up to northern Maine Saturday AM. Did some scouting Sat. evening and Sunday AM, saw 2 small bulls and plenty of fresh sign so we were pretty optimistic. We didn't see any other hunters at all so that was a bonus. They headed out early Monday and I stayed at camp. After many cups of coffee and a little pacing, got the call at 8:00 AM, Moose Down! Dropped a small bull in the road with one shot from an ought-6 at 100 or so yards. 11 point, 612 lbs. He made a ramp out of plywood and 2x4's and we hauled it into the truck and headed back to camp. Stuffed 20 or so frozen milk jugs into it, loaded up and headed home. After 3 hrs. of driving on dirt we hit civilization. Saw 78* on the temp sign, not good. After another 3 hrs. down the interstate we finally reached the butcher shop and got it skinned, quartered and hung in the cooler where it will sit for a few days. Lot of fun. Still have friends up there trying for one. We're supposed to get anywhere from 3-7 inches of rain in the next day and a half. I pity them.

I'm in the Augusta area. We hunted northwest of Clayton Lake just off the St. John River. 6 plus hours from here depending on the condition of the dirt roads.

Is the Golden Road still a main logging road up north Sub? Don't know if you were anywhere near it. Long haul to Clayton Lake from your place.

It's still a logging road. We traveled on it for about 20 or so miles before we turned onto the Telos Road and headed up past Chamberlain Lake.

I have been hunting about 2 hours east of where you are there. Missed last year and may have the same dilemma this year. Love me that Northern Maine.

2 hours east would put you in the Ashland/Rt. 11 area.

That's about it. Off the Oxbow road most all the time, near the camp that burned a couple years back.
