I would like to get feedback on what kind of pick up would you buy for personal use everyday as well as throwing wood in the back. I drive 30 miles to work and back. I'm looking to get one around March...
What is your price range? Do you want a new or used truck? How many people do you need to cart around at one time?
I bought my second Toyota Tundra last month. I went with the double cab-that has a 6.5' bed. The cab would be roomy enough for kids IMHO. My brother has a 3/4 ton GMC with an 8' bed. That is a long truck!
I have the Ram 1500 Sport crew cab. To get non-commercial plates I had to stay with the 5'7" bed. Plenty of room in the back for three adults. I had stepped up to the Ram when my three kids, 2 twelve year olds and a ten year old, out grew the back seat in my Nissan Frontier. It has the 5.7 Hemi with plenty of power and reasonable gas milage. Only drawback is that it needs 89 octane. Has all the bells & whistles. Paid about 42,000 but it was at the end of the model year. These newer ones ride good and get decent mileage. The ram is usually cheaper in my area by about $10k for the same level packages.
this is the time of year to buy leftovers. I looked at a $60,000 dodge last year at this time, could be bought for 49,000. A 1 year old should fall into your price range if a HD/diesel is needed. In a half ton, you should be able to get anything you like.
45k is a bunch of capital down the drain on vehicle up north. You could spend a few hundred on flight down south and find a nice used 4x4 - that hasn't seen any salted roads under 50-75k for $35k or less. If you expand your search area I'd be happy to look something over and shuttle you from the airport if you consider that route

I am on the same page as Basod. Even though I could buy new, I look for a nice used truck. Save $10-15,000 real quick. Can use that money on other things or better yet don't spend it. You never know what's going to happen. I have owned Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Nissan, and Toyota trucks. Like said earlier, they have all become better over the years and are all reliable workers. With driving that kind of mileage I would strongly consider your gas mileage. I went 3/4 ton this time. But I only have to drive a few miles to work each day. When I was driving 44 miles each way I owned a 4 cylinder CRV for the commute and an older 4x4 work truck for the local work. Like I said. I have owned many trucks over the years. I really like Toyota, Ford, and Chevy.
