Just starting to use the stove and a new Lux touch screen thermostat . I've had a lot of good advice and thought this would be a good topic .

Depends on what time of year. In the shoulder season, when I'm using on/off mode, I have the swing setting at 2. In the cold part of the year ,when I'm using hi/lo, then I decrease the swing setting to 1.

This is a great topic, but the Quad operates differently than any other stove in its shut down/start up sequence because of the thermocouple.

It's possible to run a lower swing on your stat. But you want to make sure that the stove is off at least 20-30 minutes (after the combustion blower shuts off) before the stove starts back up. This can and will be a volatile situation.

With my Quad, I ran 4° unless I ran the stove constantly. Then I just set it low or Med and let it run 24/7.

My current stoves I still run larger swings when using On/Off even though they can restart immediately after shut down and have no overfeeding issue like the Quads.

The only time I run a small swing 1°-2° is when running Hi/Low.

I have always been a fan of letting the stove run lower and slower for a longer period and having a large swing (On/Off mode). . This low and slow heating will allow the stove to heat the entire room and all of its contents to your desired temp. This gives the hoise/room a good "soak" in that heat and will keep the stove off longer.

If you run a higher heat setting, then the stove just heats the air up in that room and the stat shuts the stove down. With all the contents in the room still being cooler, the stat temp drops quicker and the stove starts sooner. Thus the hot restarts.

Unless the house is super cold (stove ran out of pellets, etc) I try to never use the highest setting. Your home will be more comfortable with a lower heat setting that ran longer.

The Santa Fe and Castile are not so bad because of being lower BTU (don't feed as much), but the CB 1200 can make a HUGE fire on a hot start.

I don't recommend anyone trying it on purpose, but of the stove is shutting down and you retort it within a few minutes of being off, you'll see the problem I speak of. Thus the reason I always recommend a large swing for this stove. 3° minimum. Unless your stove is off for a fair amount of time after the combustion blower is done with its cleaning cycle.

Here are the papers that show the steps of start up. If your stove still has a red light (see step 9) on the control board, and it's starting up? Then the thermocouple is still over 250° (remember that burn pot is cast iron and the thermocouple is in a ceramic cover that retains a lot of heat as well).

Look lower left on 1st page. It's for Castile, Santa Fe and 1200. The 1200 has a longer feed cycle (98 seconds over the 60 of the smaller BTU stoves). Only these 3 Quad stoves.

Even by the end of step 20 (end of heating cycle). It says stove is ready for another call for heat. But watch the light on the control box at start up on a hot start. Instead of feeding the required 98 seconds of pellets at start up, the stove will not stop at 98 because the thermocouple is still above 250°. So it just goes right into feeding pellets (which is step 8. Instead of waiting for the ignition of pellets). So you end up with a whole lot of pellets in the pot once the ignitor does light off the pellets.

Hope this explains better. It's been a known issue for Quads for some time. So long as you let it cool properly? There is never an issue or worry.

Nope. Only the 3 Quads listed. Quads use a thermocouple. Many other stoves dont. They just use snap discs to sense fire.

It's a good guideline for a lot of stoves, but not an exact guideline.

For the Castile, Santa Fe, and Classic Bay it's the best troubleshooting tool you'll find. I suggest anyone with test stoves to save those 2 attachments or bookmark this page to help in the future.

Sorry about the hijack. Back to swing settings.

Any more questions on this Topic. Please feel free to PM me.

I don't like my stove turning on and off much either so I try to just let it run, then shut it down when it needs to be cleaned. This is easy to do once it actually gets cold, not so much in the shoulder seasons.

Just wanted to thank everyone for your knowledge because I now realize there was a lot of things I could have done wrong and never would have known it . I now go into the heating season with a much better understand of my particular pellet stove . Thanks again , love this site .:D
